I’ve had pretty big conflict with broodies. My one main broody is docile as can be (her chicks get so used to us that when she stops mothering they, they’ll fly on our shoulders if they want protection).
But one time another hen went broody and if either of their respective chicks went near...
Just wanted to give a quick update! I’ll try to update once she starts laying, but we’re fairly sure she’s an EE pullet at this point. Her feathers were so stripped when I took her (I’m guessing because she was the only pullet in a pen of all cockerels) that her stance really made her look...
I’d love to see photos if you end up getting any! I can’t picture what he would look like as a rooster at this point but I know he could just be really slow to mature. This is another (horrendous) photo showing him (far left) with our crested cream legbar and Icelandic cockerels that are 4-6...
I’m a bit excited about it, TBH! We’ll likely keep him either way since he’s so submissive and the kids like him, so if he end up laying it’s just a bonus at this point!
I did not know about the skinny legs that a few people have mentioned was an indicator for the sex! I think you’re right about the mix - I don’t know of any pure breeds with both muffs and barring like that, now that I think about it. The behaviour has really been a tell as well - I’m sure the...
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if she got a few EEs with her hatching eggs, so that’s a very real possibility. I normally ask more questions but because he was a random freebie and it was after dark we didn’t discuss it too much. The chicks I got from her were salmon faverolles from her...
Could that be what he is? All I know is that he came from hatching eggs but I believe they were all pure breeds - she was going to let me know the possible breeds but never got back to me and I didn’t want to push given that he was free 😂
I don’t think there’s any leakage! The photo with my daughter (blue shirt) holding him is probably the truest representation of his colouring, but the entire body is the same colour (and white).
Sooo about a month ago I was picking up chicks and wanted to grab a cockerel so I’d have one that matured a bit earlier and offer a bit of protection. Seller had a pen of all the cockerels she wasn’t planning to keep and told me to take my pick. It was dark, this guy caught my eye because he...
Funny, it’s my 6 week old Orpington (clear cockerel) that insists on roosting every night (although he’s with faverolles so they may not be much better)... once he gathers up all the others into the coop, he jumps up about 2 levels while the other roost on or around a baby roost on the floor - I...
Aaaand it’s official, everyone is back! The last hen, Blueberry, is hanging out in the yard now. Thanks to everyone who commented/read! Such a relief - though I’m still a bit curious where in the forest they went!
Three have now returned! Possibly all 4, I can’t tell because the 4th one is black and could easily blend in with the other black chickens under the coop, but I should know in an hour or two when they go inside! Thank goodness because I’m beyond drenched just walking out to the coop and back!
Thanks. I know I just need to hope, but it’s so hard. It is pouring like nothing else outside right now, too, so I’m sure they are just sheltering somewhere (everyone here is sheltering under the coop at the moment).
