New Baby Ducks on the Way - With Live Nest Cams

Thanks Lydia! we are hoping to build a dock/coupe combo right by the pond. Last year we didn't have these issues, but this year was quite the challenge. Of course, we had more non-flyers as well. I think having a safe home closer to the pond would help. On a positive note, Babies hatched...

New Baby Ducks on the Way - With Live Nest Cams

Last year our flock was 8. We lost 3 to cars, 2 to a fox, and 1 to a coyote :(. Our remaining two (Our Cayuga and Mallard) settled in on nests a few weeks ago, and we have (as of last weekend) 17 viable babies! ALL the babies are mallards. The Cayuga (Ocho) had plenty of eggs, but non were...

Will Ducks thirst themselves? Won't get in pond!

Today they are swimming across the small pond next door. Between our pond and the neighbor, they've been in the water all day today. Hopefully they keep this up! We'd like them in our pond but we'll take the forward progress. This tiny pond freezes much quicker than ours. And we'll have a...

Will Ducks thirst themselves? Won't get in pond!

It's a Friday Miracle! They have been swimming around in the pond today quite a bit -- staying close to the edge but swimming and eating and staying in for periods of time. Seems the wild mallards got them curious. The cooler weather slows down the fish and such too... This is the neighbors...

Will Ducks thirst themselves? Won't get in pond!

Thanks for the responses! They did NOT see Peso get eaten -- they were secure in their pen -- but Peso slept on the water as she refused to go in the pen starting last fall... So we don't know if she hopped out early morning, or if she was too close to the edge and got snatched... :( The new...

Will Ducks thirst themselves? Won't get in pond!

Duck Wizards: We have 7 female ducks that refuse to go in our 1/8 acre pond. My thought is that if we don't provide any water, they'll go in the pond eventually, or at least drink from the edge. Wife thinks they won't so we keep a small bin of fresh water so they can drink where they eat (about...

Will ducks " come home" at night like chickens?

we had a mallard and 3 khakis last summer. They'd free range / swim in our 1/8th acre pond all day, then we'd walk them to the pen at night (300 feet away by our pole barn) and they'd go right in. Let them out in the morning, repeat. Sometimes, they'd go in on their own -- or be waiting by...

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

All the little duckies are the doing well. Field trip outside today. They met our 1 year old Mallard... She gave them a couple bossy pecks but didn't seem bothered by them. Short video of the pickup:

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

I wonder why the scanning/tracking of these isn't as good. The Metzer site does mention that they'll often fail to scan them. I'm curious if USPS just forgets because they are special treatment or what. My tracking was relatively complete. Sounds like they don't have a status for "pending...

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

Metzer was VERY quick to response to my inquiry about a replacement, and gave me the option of refund, or new welshie + random duck. We really wanted the welsh, so I decided to get purchase a Cayuga that I also really wanted to ship with the Welshie instead of the random duck. They can't ship...

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

Live Stream: Duckies have arrived! 7 of the 8 are happy and health and feasting! Our little Welshie didn't make it. Probably have them send us a replacement as soon as possible, we were looking forward to that one! The other 7 were perky and happy and energetic. They are enjoying their...

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

We are about 3 miles from A post office. but MY post office is about 30 minutes away. I thought about going there at like 7 this morning... but they don't open until 8:30. Perhaps I should have gone when they opened -- but I'm not sure what time the trucks leave with the mail. Our usual...

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

"Out for delivery"!! I've seen a few comments that the Post Office didn't call and brought them instead. Looks like I may be one of these. I tried to call and ask, but no answer.. still pretty early. Duck Day!!:celebrate

Ducklings on the way from Metzer Farms!

Cali ducks! Was hoping for Memphis for a shorter ride for them, but they are coming from Cali. 🕶️ The times are wonky on the tracking, but they left Gonzalez and arrived to San Jose late last night. Nothing since, which is apparently fairly normal for the duck shipments.
