Definitely do that! I used 12” shelf brackets to mount 2x4s and big branches along the walls of my run and the ladies love it, they hang out on them all the time. You may be able to fix a board on one side of your run to let you have a solid surface to do that? Get creative :)
A great start! I second the suggestion of covering the run. It will help with giving them some shade as well as rain cover. Did you get the racoon locks for the omlet latches? If not, definitely will need to figure that out as the UK version (where there are no racoons) is not racoon proof. For...
Hey there. I have some experiences that I can share. I first bought a heated water dish about three years ago (this one in the middle size) from Princess Auto when they had a sale, but you can get them online at almost the same price. They are not cheap! My first one lasted a solid 3 years...
I don’t think so, they were basically lukewarm at best under their feet, maybe helped for the first hour of bedtime? The frost is from their breath, it happened last year too. They tuck into their feathers. They’ve not moved from their cuddled roost in the run since this morning and now the sun...
My girls had frost/bit of ice on their backs this morning. I’m almost certain it’s from their breath freezing as they’re tucked into their feathers for the night.
Happy to report my heated water dish is still working well at -31c this morning!! Frosty around the edges but no frozen water, kept...
Update - the hand warmers in towel pockets did not even get remotely warm in -30c. This morning it hit -31, only the second time it’s been this cold here in at least the decade we’ve been here. It’s supposed to stay almost at -20 for several days :/
I added more bedding to the coop and run...
Ahh... I find CGPT tends to summarize bad/wrong info, especially for animal and plant information. So I’m glad you’re also on this forum!
From experience- my chickens generally have paler combs that are slightly shrunken all winter, after their moult, as we have very cold, long and snowy...
same. I only could put them in the basement but it’s closer to the furnace so it would be pretty warm (and a LOT warmer than outdoors) I was actually thinking I will also try to wrap the roost in wool so it’s warm on their feet but also grippable. I will update!
I’m also prepping too for tomorrow, temps are forcase to be close to -35c with a ‘feels like’ temp of closer to -40. I just have two hens currently so i’m considering hanging a wool blanket to create a smaller coop inside their coop for the night so they don’t have too much cold air around them...
yes they won’t nibble the leaves usually but if they are interested in the dirt near the bottom they might dig it up :) hopefully they get some tomatoes!
I do this sometimes, but usually it’s later in the season when I’m tired of tomatoes or they’ve got blight etc. The main reason I keep the hens out of the garden is that they scratch up the plants so they uproot them. They also love eating tomatoes (or at least pecking them before I see!) but...
If it helps anyone to make a decision, I have loved my original omlet autodoor (no wifi) and it’s been working great for over three years. I have never even had to change the batteries, even in many winters of -20c (it’s just 10% battery now though, so the time is coming this week!). I suggest...
Thank you! Yes her voice is totally normal this morning, thankfully, so maybe she had something stuck in her throat. I will certainly monitor her over the week. Cheers for your help.
Just this afternoon I checked on my girls and one of them sounds very strange! Her voice is hoarse and a little raspy. She looks good otherwise, no discharge and I saw her eat/drink etc. Is she ok? It’s been very snowy today so I only watched them from the house this morning and just popped out...
