I am well aware of chicken math, having been a victim myself, but I am now experiencing something completely different!
For 3 years now, I let my broody hatch a few eggs.
1st yr = 2 roos, 1 hen.....an adult hen died later that summer, 1 roo ran off
2nd yr = 2 roos, 1 hen....an adult hen died...
when a chicken dies, does its vent stick out? I know that it is common for animals (and humans) to defecate when they die, so I didn't know if this was the case or if she had a prolapse and I didn't catch it.
I heard a weird noise in the coop last night. It ended up beng this hen breathing...

My roosters have the large single combs. Last year one of them lost all his points to frostbite.
So this year I drilled some holes in the peak of the coop, switched to deep litter, and added a heat lamp.
Now another one is showing signs of frostbite. I had read here about putting vaseline on...
just when ya think ya got it all together...
The birds have started eating the styrofoam insulation in the shed.
They have plenty of food...
so now are they gonna die?
this must be my lucky day.
the 3 loose birds stayed around the shed calling back & forth with the ones in the shed.
as it got dusky out, they were acting like they wanted back in to roost with the others. my quandary was, if I opened the door, would the other birds get out or would the loose...
ok...what I ended up doing is emptying out an old metal 8x10 shed and making the guineas their own coop. It is in a different yard than the chickens, so there shouldn't be any inter-racial problems.
Now I need to learn about feeding them.
I set them up with layena layer crumbles, scratch...
Yeah, I thought about netting over the top. Of course, DW will complain about it looking "trailer trashy" (even tho we DO live in a trailer, )
but it will only be for a couple of months.
We clipped the wings on the chickens the first year, and they've never since tried to fly out. Would that...
I work in dog rescue and one of our local county shelters, knowing that I also have chickens, called me today to ask if I would take some guineas.
I don't yet know how many males/females, but I know they are adults and were formerly kept with chickens. My flock of 12 chickens (10 hens, 1 RIR...
by the way, the white thing felt like a small rubber ball or a hard peeled grape. It did not burst if I squeezed it.
sorry that I did not cut it open, but it popped out of my fingers and right down the drain. Not worth the plumbing job to fish it out...
I searched the forum and didn't find anything like this...
Egg production was down for awhile, so I did the mite/lice and worming routine on my chickens. First day that everyone seemed to start laying again, one of my EE's put out this HUGE goose egg size egg.
Curious to see if it was a...
UPDATE:
He seemed to be doing very well until today. He is not at all liking to walk and tends to hunker down with the weight off his feet while he eats or drinks. I'm guessing the other toes are really bothering him right now.
I put the blue-cote on the one toe he lost and put antibiotics in...
Can't figure out if this contest is still going on or if folks are just still posting pics....
if it's NOT still going on, then where is the list of winners?
I figure he doesnt crow cuz good ol' Charlie Brown was already the adult established roo and this guy (Schroeder) came in as a chick last summer.
The banty roo crows, but Charlie can't catch him cuz he's small. Maybe Schroeder just doesnt want his butt kicked! but I have fun callin him my gay...
