4 week old chicks - different sizes

We have 26 four week old chicks in the garage from the hatchery. 13 Easter eggers and 13 meat birds. The meaties are 2-3 times larger than the other chicks already and go crazy at feeding time. I'm worried the EEs will be trampled. Should we separate them or will they be fine? They have most of...

I might be their worst enemy

Nope, he and his favorite girl friend were eaten while protecting the flock about 3 months ago, they were the first, and last we've lost until now. Still looking for another rooster to manage the hens. When we lost the first two, we found evidence (bunches of feathers in two different spots) -...

I might be their worst enemy

Hi all, had chickens for about 6 months now. We live in northern Indiana - it's been cold. They free range all day - they seem to like the snow. We keep loosing chickens - lost 4 in the last 4 weeks. They just dissapear with no signs. Two days ago, my son was giving treats to a wandering bird...

    Fire Warning

Just a reminder to be VERY careful when using a heat lamp with baby chicks. Had a friend loose his 24x36 barn when the lamp caught fire overnight and burned it to the ground. It was on pine shavings I think and may have fallen over or been too close to the bedding.

Chickens won't sleep in the coop

2-3 days. If that doesn't do it, try putting a light in it an hour before dusk, then turning it out when you lock them up.

    New pullets won't free range

We have 3 hens and a rooster that are about 6 months old. They free range all day and are giving eggs now. We added three more 4 month old pullets about a week ago, and they won't go more than 10 feet away from the coop. They grew up in a run and only ate when fed. How can I get them to go out...

    Watering my birds

I bought some nipples from QC supply online, and they are on the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. They have been set up for about 4 days. First two, I took the other waterer away. My girls are not using them yet. I put the other water bucket back in yesterday, then last night held them down and...

So, how much kitchen waste can they handle?

I've been feeding mine kitchen scraps every night after dinner. Every now and then they get the bones from a chicken or other animal. They also free range all day without fences, so they should be getting lots of protien from their bugs. I do give a cup or two of layer feed if we don't have any...

I've got a green egg layer!

We have three girls, one has started laying. One is black with white speckles, the other is a rhode island red. The third is white. One of them laid a seafoam egg. Which one is it? The incredible edible egg: Who done it? And the lucky guy: If you can, please identify the breeds too. The...

    Watering my birds

Is it possible to make a waterer out of a five gallon bucket with a lid? With some sort of automatic nipple on the bottom?

    Watering my birds

Hello all, I'm new to chicken farming and still trying to figure out this watering thing. Do chickens need anything special? I've been using a 3 gallon bucket and filling it to within a few inches of the top. They seem to look over the edge and get a drink when they need it. They have access...

    First coop - thoughts

Quote: The next box was made the next day - no picture of it yet. They have been in the coup for three days now (with a short play time last night just before lights out) Tonight will be the test - I'm letting them out from 5-dusk. The flower garden is close (about 50') to the coop, but they...

    First coop - thoughts

By the way, I wasn't planning on having chickens at all until about 6:30 Monday. My plan was to put them all in the freezer Monday night, but my lovely wife thought it would be nice to get some eggs before butcher day. Then we had to buy feed, now we need to get eggs for a few months to offset...

    First coop - thoughts

Hi all, this is my second post, we're three days into chicken farming. We inherited 5 5-month olds (2 roosters, 3 pullets) on Monday around 7 PM - and I need a coop to keep them in that night. This is what I came up with by 11 - bed time for me. Please take a look and offer any suggestions. I'm...

    Watering Free-Range Birds

Hi all, I'm new to chicken farming - 2 days in. Built a coop Monday night for five 5-month old birds we inherited. We plan to free range as much as possible. They will have access to woods and a pasture with no fences. There is also a nice cool, shallow, always flowing creek about 100' from...
