    4-H Commercial Layer Project

Our county fair has a turkey, broiler and commercial layer projects for kids to compete in. They all get birds from the same flock on the same hatch date and then raise them till the fair and are judged on size for the turkeys and broilers and on laying capacity for the layers. Lots of people...

    Tracking Your Egg Sales

I've been looking for a similar solution for a while. I tried a spreadsheet but would always forget to add to it if I didn't do it right away. I recently tried Square and it is great. It gives you a point of sale on your phone, tablet or computer where you can enter your sales and track...

    Mystery Eggs

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. They have straight combs. I'm about 99% sure they are bantam silver phoenix. They came from Dr. Bramwell at the University of Arkansas and I just read that bantam silver phoenix is a line he breeds.

    Mystery Eggs

They came in small beige colored eggs. They were in between the size of a bantam and full size egg if that helps. I have a friend on facebook who said they are production reds, but I'm not to sure. I've never seen a production red look like these, plus I would think that a production red...

    Mystery Eggs

I got some eggs from a friend who didn't want them. He got them from a poultry professor at the university of Arkansas. He knew the breeds on all but 6 of them which he named "mystery eggs". Any ideas on these little guys, I know its a little early, but I thought I'd give it a shot:

    Salvaging a science project

Do eggtopsy with pictures to try to determine what went wrong and if the cooling off vs not cooling off had anything to do with it?

    Live incubator video

I really thought I'd catch most of the hatch last night, but they just started pipping this morning and I was using my cell phone to stream with. I left my webcam at work. I may run home during lunch to check on them and setup a webcam to keep an eye on them the rest of the day.

    Live incubator video

Lockdown was last night. Just passed the day 19 mark tonight so there should be some action by tomorrow morning. I setup my phone to stream overnight and I'm pulling screen shots for a time lapse on my computer. Thought I'd share the stream if anyone wants to watch...

    feeding frozen hard-boiled eggs

Its really really really really hot here. My son has some broilers that he's showing in the fair in a few weeks. They aren't eating very well because its so hot. We've got lots of eggs form our layers so I was going to boil them up some, but then I thought maybe I should freeze them to help...

Ideal surprise special, 4 months later

checked the bottom of the feet, and I'm pretty sure I've got 4 jersey black giants. 2 cocks and 2 pullets. I've got one other bird that I'm unsure about I'll try to get a pic of her and post it up later.

Ideal surprise special, 4 months later

Ok, I guess it was it just high hopes that they were copper marans. What threw me was that 2 of them have black legs and the other 2 have yellow legs. I'll check the black ones tomorrow for the color of the bottom of their feet.

Ideal surprise special, 4 months later

Back in January I got 30 of the Ideal surprise specials I can identify most, but there are a few I'm not sure about. I've got 4 pullets that I think are black copper marans but ideal doesn't sell them and they could also be black sex links so I wanted to check with the experts: Then there...

New 13-week olds roosting in nesting boxes

I know this is an old post, but I've been having the same problem. Today I got an idea. There is a piece of 15/32 chip board that is tacked in front of my nest boxes to keep the bedding from falling out. That edge is where my young girls always roost, even though there is plenty of room on...

Canning Question and Spicy Wonton Sauce Recipe

This is a really old post, but I checked out "Ball's Complete Book of Home Preserving" from my library and while thumbing through some of the recipes I came across one very similar to the wonton sauce recipe I was originally asking about. I made up a batch last night since I had all the...

what age will my hens start to lay

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. 20 weeks isn't a set-in-stone date that they should start laying at. I think 20 weeks is more the time that you should start looking for eggs and paying attention to your hens to see if they start showing signs of future laying. Their combs...

They're hatching!!! Live Video and time-lapse of 1st hatch

for the live video I used ustream which is a web-based stream so no program needed. For the time-lapse I used the logitech software and auto-click. I set up auto-click to take a picture and save it on the logitech software every 45 seconds. I think if I had to do it again I'd go down to 30...

They're hatching!!! Live Video and time-lapse of 1st hatch

I had 2 hatch early this morning. One of them the kids got to watch before getting ready for school, which was fun! I've got a webcam up so I can keep an eye on them from work: live hatching camera I had my camera set up last night to take a picture every 45 seconds. I took those pictures...
