My hens live in a sand run and coop with shavings. They free range several times a week. We are thinking of mulching in the large garden area their coop stands on. They spend a lot of time foraging for bugs there.
Do any of you have experience with your flock and mulch? Is it ok for...
We have 6 heavy breeds- Easter Egger, Barred Rocks, Jersey Giant, Light Brahma, and Buff Orpington-all about 9 mos. old. We also have 2 polish "chicks" that are about 14 wks. now but are still significantly smaller. Those of you with Polish AND heavy sized hens...when do you add them to the...
The hose DID IT!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, chickengal30!! They were out in less than a minute, seriously! Duh- I wasn't thinking straight enough to come up with that.
As for the drill---I see your point and thank you---BUT, I don't even know where the drill is. LOL. Our porch is quite...
PERFECT! I'll try water first...then light. I'll post. THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! Lattice is screwed down tight. I am just worried about them getting eaten. We've already lost one today---hawk???!
I was trying to avoid ripping it off. I will if I can't do otherwise. I tried sprinkling food back to their cage/ nest box...to no avail. I was wondering if a light would work?? Or something else I am too fretful to think straight !?
I can't catch them! They ran under our raised back porch (3 polish chicks- 4wks. old). It's a raised porch with lattice...and hubby is not home to remove lattice so we can try to reach them. What do I do????? I am sure a snake/ cat will get them by morning.
We have 6 hens of various varieties that are between 9 mos. and nearly 1 year. We have no rooster, as we want these for pets/ egg layers only. This past week our Jersey Black Giant has gone loco (ie broody ::wink:. She is sitting in the 'favorite' nest box and won't get off the others' eggs...
Kuntrygirl- That looks BEAUTIFUL!
We've only had our coop up and running for 6 months now. I live in hot/humid Florida, too. I was hosing it down (not kitty scooping though) and it WAS making it a glue-y hard mess on top. So, I shouldn't do that, eh?
I would imagine the sand just dries...
We have a 10x4 Covered Sand Run. I was wondering what you all w/ covered sand runs do for maintenance?
Do you hose it down and turn sand?
Do you shovel out every so often (how often?) and add new sand?
Do you use DE in sand run?
As a new owner of both goats and hens...
Is it ok for me to let my chickens out of their coop to roam around in the goat pen? I mean, they are pecking around where goat feces is. (approx. 250 sq. feet for 2 dwarf goats and 6 chickens). Are there any parasites from the goats that could pose a...
How are your Polish roosters (temperaments) compared to other roosters you have? We only have 6 large breed hens now, are new to chickens this year, but have ordered 4 polish hen day-old chicks to be shipped from My Pet Chicken for Easter this year. In case one is a rooster, I was thinking of...
