Im just always surprised by the number of people who think hens can't lay eggs without a rooster. Magic, I say.

    broody, not dying!

So I have 3 chickens, 2 new girls, about a year old, and one old girl, 9 years old. My old girl lost her best friend (same age) about 2 months ago. The new girls and Polly, my old girl, are in separate but side by side coops and free range together in the afternoons. Don't like sleeping together...

Comment by 'mika4me' in article 'Dogs and Chickens; Everything You Need to Know About Harmonizing These Two Creatures With Each Other'

We currently have 4 chickens and two aussies. They do great together. The chickens come around the patio to hang out with us and the dogs and then seem like what??? when the humans and dogs go inside and they are left out. Our dogs try to herd and chase most anything, but Ive always introduced...

Chicken Names- whats your chickens name?

I have Polly, Clementine, Dolly, and Roxanne right now. Usually go with the music or old west sort of theme. Reba, Cassadee, Rosie, etc. For some reason those names always seem to fit my chickens.

    Chicken name Thread!!

Pick a theme. I have an old west bunch, Polly, Clementine, etc. and my new babies are named after country music singers, Reba, Cassidy, Madrid, etc.

    When to name chicks

My husband told me not to name mine this time until they were mature and healthy, and he has a point because we've lost babies before. But in my head they already have names: Reba, Cassidy, Roxanne, and Maddie. I use their names when no one is looking...

Any way to tell chick gender?

I have 4 new chicks that were all sexed as female. One of them is constantly jumping up on the backs of the others. Is she just spunky, or could this be an indication that she is really a boy? Can't remember any of my other chicks doing this so consistently...

Please help me figure this out, so frustrated!

I had a similar experience the first time I bought chicks from the local feed and seed. Of the 5 I started with, 4 got sick and three died. I couldn't figure out what was going wrong, so took one of my birds to UC Davis Veterinary School for a necropsy. They diagnosed coccidia, an intestinal...

2011 What Do You Want Added To The BYC Forum & WebSite?

I'd love to see a listing of poultry shows by geographic area. I have had a hard time locating shows near me, but I'm sure there are many and I just don't know how or where to search for them.

I can't believe my chicken ate the end off of the thermometer!

One of my chickens has apparently eaten the little glass bulb end off of the thermometer we had hanging in the henhouse. We found the thermometer on the floor early this morning and looked and looked and looked for the missing glass, but found nothing. Went through all of the bedding (with a...

    space for chickens

Okay, I'm thinking I should just build a second hen house and run and put the new girls in that. If I introduce the birds properly, maybe they can all range around outside their coops together and then go back to separate and more spacious indoor quarters. Will chickens always go back to their...

    space for chickens

Like just about everyone else we built our coop too small... It is 12 square feet inside and has a 20 square foot run attached. The chickens also get an hour or two a day of foraging around outside the pen, depending on work schedules and weather. Right now we have two chickens. I would like to...

    our first egg!!!

Polly, my australorp, just laid her first egg at 18 weeks. It is small but perfect, and a lovely dark brown color. It's my first egg ever, too, and I am so excited I have called everyone I know to tell them... I feel like a kid, and I'm 46 years old! Do I need to refrigerate the egg right away...
