I don't mean to hijack, but I might be interested in some eggs from the Blue Scale quail, and waiting until March would be fine for me, my incubator will be busy until close to then anyway. :)
I know I am resurrecting a really old thread here, but I am researching milo/sorghum as a feed myself. I had a thought on the conversation here about the high tannins in some types of milo. I haven't researched it for the chickens yet, but in my feed research for my rabbits (I am working on...
I have a pigeon that seemed slightly off yesterday, and today is huddled at the back of their little house with her feathers all fluffed up. The thing that seemed off about her yesterday is that she was, well, dirty. This is a pure white bird, and normally never gets so much as a SPECK of dirt...
Ok, thanks. That is what I was worried about, is her leaving the eggs if I messed with them. They do have some straw in their little house, but a lot of it got kicked out before the eggs were laid. Should I add more and let them do whatever they want with it?
I am very new to pigeons, and I have two that are nesting. The female (hen?) has laid two eggs, and sort of appears to be sitting on them. But since I hadn't expected eggs, they don't have a proper nest and the eggs are sort of getting rolled around in their little house. What I need to know is...
Thank you, that is exactly what I wanted to know, is if it would taint the meat. It didn't matter with the guinea I put down, she was badly infected so we wouldn't have eaten her anyway.
When we had the horrible heat wave last summer, I put out shallow pans of ice water for them, they would stand in the water and cool their feet. It seemed to help a lot, I only lost one to the 100 degree temps, and that one had gotten out of the pen and went into a very hot outbuilding for some...
You have to carefully limit feed, but yes they can live for a couple of years anyway. I NEVER give my Cornish X as much feed as they want, they get as much as they can clean up in fifteen minutes and that's it. I have a Cornish X hen that is about a year and a half old now, and has been laying...
Only if you are able to get some hens in the first place! LOL I thought I had a trio this spring, turned out I had a mature drake and two juvenile drakes. So I guess I will learn to process ducks on one of these drakes and hope to get some hens later.
I sadly had to euthanize a sick guinea this week. I put her in a sack that I tied to the tailpipe of my car, this was the first time I had done that and found that it was super fast and seemed to be pretty gentle on the bird as well. What I am wondering is, can I kill my meat chickens this way...
I am curious about something here. I don't at all mean to be insulting, but I wonder why you are feeding vegetarian? Obviously free range birds are going to be eating bugs and even small rodents when they can, they are omnivores after all.
I don't know, I haven't seen any evidence of runny poops on my birds, and I use a fair amount of oats and barley in my ration too. I also use BOSS and alfalfa pellets. I have been feeding this mixture for about three months now, I think? Mabye more. I had been using white millet, but I noticed...
I am feeding fermented whole grains to my birds now. The mix I have been using is adequate protein wise for my adult flock, but too low for growing chicks. So I got some fishmeal to add to the FF for the chicks, but I am not sure how much to add, per five gallon bucket. Can anyone give me hints...
