Cinnamon Queen questions: health, longevity, temperament etc

We currently have 4. Coop is 6x4 foot, 24 sq foot, but I am building a new one this Spring. Will maintain 4-5 sq feet in coop per hen. Run is currently 10x13 but coop is inside run. There is a little over 70 sq foot of run space, new coop will be outside run. Current hens will be a year old...

Cinnamon Queen questions: health, longevity, temperament etc

Thanks that's great info. As we have 4 and only allowed 2 more, we are looking for a breed that will easily fit in, be calm, docile not necessarily dominant. May have to look at other breeds. Any suggestions?

Cinnamon Queen questions: health, longevity, temperament etc

Thanks @alinas2010 can you tell me a little more about being flock leaders. I thought they typically end up lower on the pecking order.

Cinnamon Queen questions: health, longevity, temperament etc

Thinking of getting two Cinnamon Queens. We are in urban area, allowed 6 hens and no roosters. We currently have 4: one Wellsummer, two easter eggers and one unknown. Has anyone had experience with CQs they can report back on? Do they have a short life expectancy based on high egg production...

    Wellsummers pecking and feather eating

Coop is not raised. The two Wellsummers we bought as point of lay pullets in Oct and kept them in a smaller coop for about a month until they were same size as others. Initial integration was good, until recent feather pecking and eating behavior. They came from a Hatchery and one had been...

    Wellsummers pecking and feather eating

Coop is 6x4. Run is10x12 but the coop is in it, useable space is 7x12 in front, 1.5x5 on each side of coop and 1x10 on rear, behind coop where they hangout to warm up. 5 hens, coop is moving out of run this year.

    Wellsummers pecking and feather eating

I have a flock of 5 total, though 2 Wellsummers are the most recent addition. When I noticed pecking and feather eating I increased protein and decreased scratch. They also get a hanging cabbage a week for boredom busting and have a suet block with meal worms, BOSS and a flock block. It's...

    Winter Venting Issue

Agreed. However, I am a little low on options right now. Initially intended to build a lumber framed run, but was given the galvanized pipe run as a gift. I am hoping to copy this idea but with 4 2x4 per gable piece and plastic tarp this year, possibly polycarbonate next year. The Bay space...

    Winter Venting Issue

Appreciate your help and insight. This week's goal is to finish reinforcing galvanized tubes from run with 2x4 lumber, wrapping with plastic with ventilation on front and back at top.

    Winter Venting Issue

Do you recommend square mesh on roof too? Do you think the 4.7.x 4.7 fan I found may work for ventilation if screwed to metal gable piece? It has a variable speed controller.

    Winter Venting Issue

standard 1/2 inch square mesh, i think 19 gauge. its 4 feet high, wraps around the all vertical walls. Not installed on roof. I did cut out the louvers, the opening was very little and i cant imagine it allowed a lot of air flow. I may install square mesh on inside of them. my yard is...

    Winter Venting Issue

I have seen this fan, its 4.7 by 4.7 inches. can operate at 3, 6, or 12 volts. At 3 volts its 750 rpm and 28 CFM, would replace the air in coop in 14 mins. o.1 watt so fairly energy efficient.

    Winter Venting Issue

Thanks, how effective was the whirly bird? I don't like the design of this steel shed. there is a top rail and bottom rail, self tapping screws go in each and that provides the structure. cutting any piece of the all would impact the structure, which is why am rebuilding next spring after...

    Winter Venting Issue

The material covering the louvers is PVC used for covering roof gutters to keep leaves out. The run now has that square mesh around it too 4 foot high and covering the entire run for predators. I am currently working on snow load. Each vertical post is reinforced with a 2x4 and each horizontal...

    Winter Venting Issue

New Chicken Owner, this is our first year. We have have 5 Gals, no Roo's - residential zoning. Originally I bought this coop, it said it was good for 3 chickens. However, on setting it up, even two would be a tight squeeze. We originally wanted only 3 chickens, but considering this was too...

What breed and gender? Please help

@HorseGirlAbby thanks, yes she is a cutie. She is quite broad across the back compared to the other two pullets and she has a super long neck. Was worried she may be a roo. The others started laying last week, may e this week will be her week.

What breed and gender? Please help

Chicken newbie here. Bought 5 pallets at TSC in spring and 3 were Roo's. I then bought this pullet from a Facebook chicken group in Maine. Name is Smokie, not sure if it's gender. Feather footed, sweet personality, non aggressive but super timid. Low chicken on the pecking order. Smokie is...
