What are your homesteading goals for the year?

I am adding three raised garden beds. Compost is cooking. I ordered blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, herbs, tomatoes, and peppers online to be shipped in spring.

Do you Clean out poop from the run?

I have sand in 2/3 of run and compost material in the back 1/3. I scoop the poop from sand and toss in compost pile. Chickens scratch the compost around when I add dry leaves and chopped straw. Once a month I take most of the compost out and add it to my garden pile.

How do you make your run fun for your chickens?

I give them grass clipping and chopped straw to scratch in. Will also hang a tree branch in a hook. I have pots of cheap herbs that I will put in run in a rainy day. Lots of perches.

Please help - entire batch of chicks dying suddenly - TWICE

So sorry for your losses. I am also new to chicks and from Mass. Got my chicks from koopscoops in Westport, MA. Brooke has pullets. I used a pop up puppy pen from Amazon. I have town water but use a pitcher filter for drinking and filtered baby chick water as well. I used the same organic feed...

Red Tailed Hawk on tree branch 10 feet from chicken run...

I am going to construct a daytime, portable aviary out of an old 8’ pop up shelter frame. Not ground predator proof but for chickens to have temporary time outside on the grass. Pics to follow when completed.

Red Tailed Hawk on tree branch 10 feet from chicken run...

I have only seen chipmunks on occasion. No droppings in my shed, or on patio. I just turned my entire compost bin over when I moved its location and so no signs there either. How do I find out? My neighbor has several bird feeders set up about 100 feet from my coop area.

    Feeder and water location

I keep both water and food outside the coop in their enclosed run. I feel this encourages them to go outside.

Too early to tell if this is a roo?

Pretty bird! Yours has feathers more uniform and less blotchy than I would expect on a cockerel. My EE cockerel was the last to fully feather, friendliest of all my birds. I was suspicious, and at 12 weeks he started a soft crowing in the morning.

Red Tailed Hawk on tree branch 10 feet from chicken run...

Large hawk landed on a tree branch, 5 feet off ground, very close to chicken run and my girls ran like crazy into coop. Hawk flew away almost immediately when it saw me. Poor girls were super spooked! One sang an "egg song" for a while afterwards. There was no way for the hawk to get into the...

Any use for the feed dust? Bake a chicken cake?

I feed my 14 week old pullets starter/grower crumbles and the fine powder at bottom of feeder gets ignored or spread on the ground. I put some in a bowl and added water and there was some interest from birds. I could try and ferment but this would be total mush. I am almost tempted to treat the...

Is this easter egger a rooster?

It's the pretty ones we love unfortunately. Mine crowed at 11 weeks.

Opinions on using sand in the coop?

I am a new chicken owner and have only 4 birds, now 14 weeks old. I started with pine shavings in brooder but cleaned it out so often it overwhelmed my compost bin! Once chicks were a few weeks old and knew not to eat the bedding, I switched to a sand/pdz mixture in brooder. I now use sand/PDZ...

The third picture is clearly the silver legs. It can be an Ameraucana even if the colors are non-standard.
