Is my rooster spreading herpes / thrush?

We had a flock of 14 hens & 1 rooster that we rescued back in April ‘02 in dire conditions. (Overcrowded conditions, red mite, lice scaly leg mites etc.) The rooster was kept on his own separately from the hens with no parasites. They had been living with a different rooster. We lost 8 hens to...

Hen always has a dirty bottom - why?

Can anyone help me try and figure out why my hen always has a dirty bottom? We have had her for a year and I think she would be a maximum of 2 years old. She was laying 4-5 times a week but stopped laying about 7 months ago and after that she has a permanently dirty bottom. It is all clumping...

    Injured hen - Fox Attack

Thank you! She’s now much better and although she has a sore wing she’s on the mend. Thank you! We didn’t treat her with anything in the end as she started to look much better and despite a sore wing she’s nearly back to normal. Fingers crossed your Rooster made it through? 🤞

    Is this a louse?

Thank you for the advice everyone. After a very thorough google search I’m pretty sure it is a “Carpet Beetle.” Pic here - see what you think! I’m incredibly relieved to know that it’s not a mite or louse infestation!! 😅😅

    Is this a louse?

What on earth are this? Can anyone help me please? I have found them in the house over the last couple of days and I suspect they are off the chickens…? They had lice but we treated them with Ivormectin (2 doses 12 days apart) but they looked different to these critters. Please see photos and help!!

    Injured hen - Fox Attack

Also - as an aside she has been making a purring sound (which I’ve never heard her so before!) It’s when she moves into a sunny spot in the garden (I’ve moved her there with a friendly hen to keep her separate where I can keep an eye on her.) She only does it when she’s stood in a hot sunny...

    Injured hen - Fox Attack

Unfortunately a Fox managed to get into the hen house on Thursday night and we went from 12 to 4 chickens. ☹ I found one of the hens facedown in a patch of nettles breathing with its beak open. No visible injuries other a bald spot where it’s tail feathers have been ripped out. She’s drinking...

    Is my rooster just mean?

    Rooster chases hens every morning!

Anyone else’s Rooster go on the rampage first thing in the morning as soon as they are down from the perch? We have 12 hens to 1 rooster and they have over an acre to free range so it’s not lack of space / on top of each other. He spends about 10 minutes terrorising them (it can be any one of...

    Lash egg?

(Last picture to show the size of the eggs she was laying. Is it normal / would the size be suggestive of issues?)

Poorly hen - sour / impacted crop?

@AidKD - I found this in her coop this morning… does it look like lash egg to you or could it be something she passed due to the impacted crop? She had a messy vent and both the vent / this white lump smell pretty grosse… 🤔

    Lash egg?

I found this in my chickens cage this morning (she likes to sleep in a cage on the floor at night - she doesn’t live in it!) We got her about 3 months ago & she didn’t lay for a few weeks then started to lay Huge eggs but stopped laying about a month ago. She’s been poorly with an impacted...

Poorly hen - sour / impacted crop?

Thankyou for the reply!! I didn’t have a chance to check yesterday morning as mad rush in morning to do school run / get to work etc but when is got home in the afternoon she was back to normal and itching to get out of the pen I had put her into. She went straight for a dust so was clearly...

Poorly hen - sour / impacted crop?

My hen has been lethargic and withdrawn for the last week and today would not come out of coop just huddled in the corner all day. Her crop was squishy and when I touched it tonight she started to make these weird movements jerking her head right up in the air, stretching her neck out and...

Will my timid hen accept chicks / pullets?

Brilliant - thank you. Yes that’s what I thought re her not mothering them so I thought if I get them old enough to fend for themselves but young enough she’s not scared of them so she can get comfortable with them and hopefully they bond.

Will my timid hen accept chicks / pullets?

Yes I totally agree but unfortunately we don’t have the set up to provide separate spaces for them. She’s been in with them for over a month now and considering she was just put straight in with them she is actually doing pretty well really. There’s not much bullying going on (they have an acre...

Will my timid hen accept chicks / pullets?

Picture of the lady in question! As you can see she is in beautiful condition and has clearly been looked after.
