    Does egg shape determine gender?

For some reason nature always wants more roosters. I think it's for safety. 65% of eggs in any clutch are roosters, on average.

I have been happily using your methods and mostly goes well. One thing I found helps and I am not sure why. Environmental adjustment: putting food down directly outside the door a few feet away before I let them out- so that the rooster can lead his girls to the treat. It distracts him from my...

    Light Sussex vs Australorps

    Thoughts on cockerel management?

Maybe re-home a couple. It makes your day when sold for breeding! I still keep in touch with new owners. Larger chooks like different ratios of hens. I find 4-5 per rooster is perfect. I could push it to a couple more but my fertility will go down as some hens "escape" attention. In my case...

    Are they eating the dirt?

Yes. Remember dirt has minerals too which are good for them. Let them have fun.

    Thoughts on cockerel management?

Just so you know they can get on well if you choose to keep more than one. Here are some brotherly love roooster pics. The last pic is when younger. They never really fought even when both were mature and mating. They even shared a dinner plate. The girls picked one as the "stud" and the other...

    Thoughts on cockerel management?

Sure. Can't keep them all, anyway! But 2 adult cockerels is my magic number (with 10 Sussex hens) and my paddocks

    Thoughts on cockerel management?

Ha ha. The girls are clever and quick. My roosters are fat and slow-er! I agree. I've seen the methods. Mostly my little hen just takes two little steps forward as he goes to mount.

    Thoughts on cockerel management?

This is the second time that i have kept two roosters with adout 10 hens. They are a friendly breed-Sussex and I have read that that like a back up. I have never had any problems. I will find a photo later and post it.

Oh dear! Maybe the extra room helps? My roosters can't catch em

to add to the above. The Roos usually won't mate or try til the girls are ready. Even if they try they will learn their lesson. Gitls Won't co-operate. I Only ever had 1 try and he got checked and rebuffed repeatedly until the girls were ready

    Thoughts on cockerel management?

I recommend keeping two roosters and this is why. You are in the unique position of them having grown up together as brothers pick two that get along well and a suitable for your needs in terms of looks and attitude. It always helps to have a backup rooster in case something happens to one of...

Why does your chicken hate you today?

My son hates me for that too. That and cornflakes

What did you do with your flock today?

Today is raining hard and is meant to do so for a week! So I let them out of the coop into the backyard. They are hanging out under the boat, then under the old Ute (or in it) and in the old little brooder coop. Sometimes they try the tree shelter. My logic is that at least they aren't standing...
