Don't remember. But more for sure, maybe 5ish per bird? I didn't know that about them. I'd hoped to get a couple fertile eggs to hatch over Easter but none of theirs did, guess I waited too long. Thanks for the info.

I don't like the strain of ISA's I have (I assume they're ISA's they look just like them), the two I have left are only 3 years old and if I get one egg a week between them I'm lucky. The Dominiques I got at the same time though are smothering me in eggs. I probably should have known it wasn't a...

I've got DH. Plus the worst of it was when the brooder/hutch was on the other side of the driveway, it's now right next to the main coop, inside the front yard which is fenced, has electric wires and where both my dogs hang out. Haven't seen one since.

Dang, you're chicken hawk central! I've never seen more than one hawk, eagle or owl at a time, fortunately. Tons of raccoons though, unfortunately!

Well I just planted 2 variety of snow pea today because the soil was dry, has been workable for 2 weeks and went I stuck my probe thermometer in the temp read 54 degrees. The seed packet actually specifies soil temps between 40 and 70 degrees. Still have one more variety to plant but I still...

Welcome. I believe there is a Cinco de Mayo hatch-along (yup, there's the link) over in the hatch a long form if you're interested. I joined in the Easter hatch along and had a good time. Plus any questions you have will be sure to be answered, the thread is already very busy!

The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Well, since none of my pure bred dark cornish hatched (not even sure if I had those eggs, they all look alike!) I checked TSC to see if they had any interesting chicks. They had 4 bins of identical pullets they were calling mixed pullets at 2.99 each. Looked like all red sex links to me, so I...

Good morning! Raining here which is nice when it's still only 33.4 degrees outside. I heard sleet in the middle of the night but what is left on my deck is so soggy it's turned clear and will be melted shortly. They say only in the mid 30s here today but looks like spring is finally taking hold...

    Maple Tappers

It's looking like DH and I have probably collected the last of our maple sap, though there may be a bit out there today, but the temps this week are rising into the 50s and and lows into the 30s. Still, DH doesn't seem to mind, apparently he's tired of boiling sap at 2 in the morning outside...

The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Well, this is the start of day 25 and nothing has hatched since the last couple on day 21 and there has been absolutely NO movement. So I am calling it. I've got 17 total chicks out of the original 38. Sixteen Dark Cornish/Dominique crosses and one little black chick with black legs, unknown...

It would also depend on where you live. I live in a poor county. Sold a neighbor a bunch at $1 a chick. Since I could never sell eggs for more than $1.50 a dozen it was about all I could expect.

That's okay but what's great about this, is that DH TOTALLY understands that now I will HAVE to hatch some more eggs because my girls are at least 3 years old and I MUST get some fresh hens to keep up egg production. He wanted this hatch to be the only one.

They ARE crosses. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I have a Dark Cornish roo and 2 hens and 4 Dominique hens. The only purebred would be Dark Cornish and those chicks are marked like chipmunks. All these look like mottled Doms, so I know the moms were all Dominiques. I'm going to have to isolate...

I got some chicks this weekend, too.Dark cornish/dominque cross. Apparently no eggs from my dark cornish hens hatched because there are no chipmunk colored chicks! These all look similar to purebred doms. Ah well. They're still cute.

Oh, he was looking up that mead thing the other night. Many years ago he made some strawberry wine. I didn't like it but he and his parents did. But I've not liked ANYBODY's strawberry wine, homemade or commercial. I want him to try blackberry but these last few years the wild blackberries and...

The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Well this is interesting. My roo is a dark cornish, my hens with the viable eggs (I thought) dominiques and and dark cornish. I looked at chick pics of both breeds. Dark cornish look like striped chipmunks while doms are black with yellow spots. All my chicks are black with yellow or white...

The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Day 22, don't see anything new for sure, but it's hard with 17 or so little black chicks running all over the bator! So I'm setting up a box to move them, pull out the shells, adjust humidity and seeing if there will be any late bloomers. Then I can post a pic or two!

The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Now mine starting hatching yesterday morning, day 20 and went gang busters last night and this morning. They're still in the bator, it is okay to hold off till tomorrow to put them in the brooder isn't it? I'm not starving or dehydrating them, am I? Brooder is in the garage and it isn't turned...
