Pine is absolutely fine for your chickens....its all I use. If they have access to dirt, they should be getting enough grit....they have sand too...not sure you need the grit at all.
I never separate mine...I change all feed to chick starter and allow mama to do the rest....
I just had a mama hatch out all 7 of her eggs...the chicks are 2 days old, already mingling with the flock...I find it easier for them to integrate this way....
you may want to segregate out your...
Wanted to share my success.....not with an incubator, so not sure this is the right thread...but 7 eggs under my Ancona, 7 chicks hatched...100% rate!! whoot whoot....
I recently rehomed my roos....my SLW squats for me and my little boy, but the other hens squat to her...she is my dominant hen, but knows I am in charge! lol....its just show submission, either to you or to a roo....
Quick question....I have a hen sitting on 12 eggs, she walked away, another hen laid an egg, it got broken and yolked all over her eggs...well, 2 of them. Can I wash them and still keep them viable? I am only on day 4 of incubation.
great info.....I can only assume it was temp or humidity....
I hatched out 4 from 12 last month or so, tried again with 36...half weren't fertile, and well, I just told the rest of the story...I will have another try in the spring I believe when I can move these brooders outside, they look...
I just hatched out 7 from 29 eggs....what happened? I had all 7 hatch out on day 19....I waiting till today, day 23....I lost 2 on day 19, I should have helped them out...they were alive and pipping, I left them alone and they died.
Today I took the rest, 19 of them, and cracked them open, it...
ok, by dry, I am referring to a very long article I read by someone who has hatched out 10's of thousands of eggs...I did add water as I live in a high desert anyway...I think it is too high right now, and may remove some.
I just candled, my first time, removed 3 eggs of the 36, they had no...
I guess after what I read about dry incubation, it doesn't really matter till lockdown, then it needs to be high....I'll keep an eye on it...thanks anyway
So after reading a few threads, I take it humidity does not matter till lockdown? I am only on my 2nd incubation, the first I only got 5 out of 12 chicks...now I have 36 more in and think I have a bit more smarts about it...
Still air, temps at 102* (almost constant)....I have candled just a...
yeah, I left that group, I was basically scolded for being confrontational with her for correcting her....I should say stating my opinion and saying all the research I had done shows that not to be true....oh well...this is a more mature forum with more knowledgeable people...I'll stick to this...
well, its still around...I find it sleeping on its back at times...I thought for certain it would die...still think it will...I have given it electrolytes in its water and am keeping an eye on it...it either sleeps or stands with head hanging and wings out to the ground, cheeping...
Just found it sleeping on its back....temp is good, not too hot...no pasty butt, I don't think it is going to make it through the night...a couple of my chicks had to be helped out of the shells on day 25...I have a feeling this is one of them...seemed to be doing great till just today...I'll...
I have 5 chicks I hatched last week, one of them seems off...it sits with its wings drooping to the floor, chirps constantly and in my opinion, it appears it is breathing harder....its pooping normal and all...but I am concerned it may be ill and contagious. Ideas?
Ok, I had a woman on FB tell me that broody hens poop in their nests, all over their eggs, to raise the humidity levels...I think this is hogwash, seeing as the poop is full of bacteria....opinions?
I have the Hova Bator 1602N, I have 36 eggs in it, as of last night, 2 thermometers, one says 97, (its got a probe that I can move around, so I placed it beside the other one )the other says 100...question....do I rotate the outside eggs into the center to keep the temps equal throughout? I read...
they say not to help...but I helped 3 of my chicks this week....if they pipped but hadn't progressed in hours, I gently broke through the shell just a bit, so you can see its beak....give it a while and wait...if nothing, gently crack the shell do NOT remove the membrane! I had to actually...
