We had fake eggs in the nest boxes for a while, but there are often real eggs in the nest boxes anyway, so we took them out.
Should we put them back in?
I've done a bit of searching but didn't find any threads that addressed this.
We have an Araucana hen who has laid fewer than 10 eggs so far (spread out over 2 months at this point, but they are getting more regular -- every second or third day).
She always lays them in the dirt. Now, we...
lol cashdl -- we tried that the first time and it just seemed to freak her out! I'll give it a while maybe and see if she figures it out herself.
I'm rather worried once I'm back at work, they'll have her egg buried by the time we get home. We'll find them by stepping on them!
I wait for mine to dry and then just wipe them "clean" with a paper towel. I wash them if they're very dirty and then put them to the front of the queue for eating.
We don't get enough to give away or sell many so that's not an issue!
Cheeky girl!
and I can add this: In UK & Ireland anyway, eggs are indeed sold unrefrigerated. In fact, a lot of people wouldn't put them in the fridge at all. I do. I think they're nuts
Also, all our eggs are brown. You wouldn't find a white chicken egg in a shop!
But yeah, I'd check them...
Oh ok! That's good to know. I was wondering if she was just a bit slow. All our other hens were laying when we got them, so this is the first "new" girl we've ever had to deal with. And she is a lunatic.
I mean, I love her and all, but when I see her running back and forth in the run, and then waddling close to the ground, pecking at the other hens and then leaving a tiny blue egg in the run bedding, I just have to shake my head.
Today was her third egg. Every time she's going to lay, she goes...
Have a feel of the crop. If you haven't been feeding grit, it's possible the crops are impacted as opposed to sour (with sour you'd normally have a bad smell from their mouths).
Impacted crop feels like tough plasticine. You can mould it into shapes if you pinch or massage it. It's really...
Sadly we lost Loonie last night. Woke up this morning and she was on her side in the crate.
Poor little thing -- how did we not notice she was getting so thin?
I'll drive to a few other shops tomorrow but all I've been able to find so far is fenbendazole and one that didn't name its active ingredient on the box, which was worrying.
I have cat/dog wormer here -- I use liquid parazole for the kittens, but can't seem to find out of it's ok for poultry...
Er, just realised
If she's not been eating -- she didn't get wormed.
Hopefully she'll start eating. Last time I went to the farm shop for wormer all they could show me was stuff for cows!
There's Verm-x in the food as we speak, but we did it not that long ago either. I just re-did it because the Welsummers passed a good few worms after and I thought it might be worth repeating. She does have some lice, but not a lot. We've dusted her anyway.
I do have Flubenevet on the way --...
