Dried mealworms for "wild birds only"

Thanks! I suddenly got concerned thinking that maybe it was like some of the odd food things that are OK fed to wild animals, but not for human consumption. But really--mealworms eat meal and veg. It's not like they could be feeding them something else, right?

Dried mealworms for "wild birds only"

I'm curious whether any of you have noticed that some of the brands of dried mealworms say "for wild birds only." I've been feeding my chickens mealworms as a winter treat for a long time, but the package I just picked up says "for wild birds only." I'll probably contact the manufacturer to...

Prolapse/contractions help for 7 month bantam

Thank you so much for this advice. I'm really concerned that her intestine has started coming out now, which does not bode well. It's no longer just the prolapse. Did yours do that? I think she has an egg that is moving down and it's just awful because she keeps pushing and pushing. :(

Prolapse/contractions help for 7 month bantam

Help! I had hoped that the dark + bath + preparation H might help, but she keeps trying to pass something and has now pushed out part of what looks like her intestine as well. I'm assuming this is not good, but am not sure at what point to try to figure out how to put her out of her misery...

Prolapse/contractions help for 7 month bantam

She passed a rubber egg, which explains the contractions, but is STILL having them. Does anyone know whether she could potentially expel all the eggs in her tract at one go? Or maybe this is something else entirely? Her crop is rather hard I noticed while giving her another sitz bath.

Prolapse/contractions help for 7 month bantam

Hi! I have a 7 month old bantam who has been laying pretty regularly for about the last month. She has been very healthy. I did notice her eating earthworms yesterday after a heavy rain so that's the only variable I can think of. I think she has prolapse, from reading all the other posts on...

Advice on discolored ears/comb (not an emergency)

Oh I see! Thank you so much for the reassuring pictures! The idea of not having mites is phenomenal!

Advice on discolored ears/comb (not an emergency)

Thanks to all! So white lobe breeds start out with red lobes which then go white? And for mites, would it be scaly mites or other mites? I haven't seen any evidence of mites on them or in coop, but I'm not sure how I would tell if they have scaly mites. Their feet look OK as far as I can...

Advice on discolored ears/comb (not an emergency)

Thanks! I should add that the black tips have been there through the summer, so not cold related.

Advice on discolored ears/comb (not an emergency)

Hi all! I'm hoping I might be able to get some advice on whether the discoloration (white powdery looking) on this 1 1/2 year old bantam Rhode Island Red's ears and the blackish ends of the comb seem normal. She's happy and laying well, but the new pullets have also developed some whitish...

Dog crate as outdoor coop for bantams?

Thank you all! These are brilliant recommendations! I'm mulling them all over, but think I can make something work based on this great advice.

Dog crate as outdoor coop for bantams?

Quote: Thanks to you and dianaross77! We do have a coop, but it's too small to fit the dog crate and currently occupied by big girls who are not terribly excited to cohabitate with the babies yet (lots of pecking through the dog crate when it's in the run). That said, maybe that's an easier...

Dog crate as outdoor coop for bantams?

Does anyone have any pictures or ideas for converting a metal dog crate to a temporary outdoor nighttime coop while we have to leave our 6-week bantams for a week unexpectedly? I'm thinking about wrapping the crate with 1/2" hardware cloth, putting it on brick or paver risers to make less...

Chickens eating ivy + toxicity to eggs?

I've just realized that my green-starved chickens (or at least one of them) have been eating English ivy when they go out to forage now that the weather is a bit better. I know that it's toxic to them and will figure out a way to deal with limiting their access to it, but was curious whether I...

Any Northerners NOT Use A Heat Lamp?

Thanks to all for the great posts about not needing heat. I'm new at chickens having recently rescued two bantams (8 months old) and am still trying to get my mind around all things chicken related. It seems from most posts that one doesn't necessarily need to worry about the cold, but that...

    Hawk attack first aid

Thank you both for such quick and helpful replies. She's in her nesting box resting with a friend. I hope she'll pull through though I suspect she may have internal injuries. Do you think it better to treat the eye now while she's still shocked or to wait until I see whether she pulls...

    Hawk attack first aid

Hi all, My 6 month old bantam hen was just victim of a hawk attack. I'd let them out to roam in the yard over lunch break and went to answer the phone when I heard the giant sqwack and was able to throw a boulder at the hawk to make him release her (after dragging across the yard). She...

Anyone used the "Clubhouse" or "Foursquare" Coops?

Thanks so much! That was exactly what I feared and really good to get confirmation. I love all of the pix posted by those of you who have converted doghouses and playhouses. I think I may be able to do that as a workable short term solution (just my luck that they've announced first frost for...

Anyone used the "Clubhouse" or "Foursquare" Coops?

Hi all, I've just adopted 2 bantams and am scrambling to figure out housing for them (I will likely adopt 2 more in the future). Materials are super expensive here (suburban north Jersey) and building a decent coop/run is likely to run close to $400. I see a couple of coops on mypetchicken in...
