Is anyone interested in taking in six or so chickens (one roo and the rest hens)? My kids' school (in Oakland) has had a coop for years with a flock of chickens that all of the kids adore. Unfortunately, due to construction, they are shutting down the coop. The flock is a mix--two bantams (a...

Thanks so much for your kind offer. I think I've found something a little more local, but if that doesn't pan out, I might get back to you. I will be driving through San Jose on Saturday and Monday, so perhaps could arrangement something then. Thanks again.
We recently lost one of our beloved hens, and my kids have been angling for a replacement (or two). Conveniently, our cochin just went broody. Is there anyone in the East Bay who might have some fertile eggs with which they would be willing to part? We're in Oakland so something in the...
I have a flock of seven, five of whom I've had for a few years. I got two chicks from a feed store at the beginning of October. One is a very sweet and BIG blue Cochin. She started laying about a month ago, and I am perplexed because she is laying perfect, little bantam-sized eggs. I've...
I have been having a feather picking issue lately as well. Our top hen (out of five hens and four little babes) started it and then passed her skill on to three more hens. Thinking back, I wish I had separated her right away, before it spread to the others. In any case, I tried protein...
Seriously. The shipping from the UK killed me. It looks from their facebook page, though, that they will soon be selling them in the USA. They also said they sold over 1,000 in the last 11 days. Yowza!
I have one and absolutely LOVE it. The instructions say not to roll a new egg from the top because they will crack upon impact. I just slide them in from the side. When you take the bottom one out, they all move down a little bit, albeit not perfectly. It's such an easy way to make sure you...
I am SO BUMMED to be missing this. I live in Oakland, love the zoo, and am obsessed with our chickens, but we have a long-planned trip to Tahoe for that weekend. Have fun everyone!!
Looking for some help figuring out a likely hatch date as I'm a total newbie at this. I put three banty eggs under our bantam cochin on Monday, September 12 at 4:00 in the afternoon. I've read that banty eggs can sometimes hatch on day 19, so would that make hatch day this Saturday? or Sunday...
Gah . . . internet went out on Friday night and we just now got it working again. Such a frustrating weekend! In any case, many thanks to you all who responded to my inquiry about fertile eggs. Sorry for having disappeared after I put that request out there! I really appreciate the many kind...
Hi Bay Area BYCers --
Does anyone close to the Oakland area have any fertile eggs for sale? My kids' school has a garden with a chicken coop and, unfortunately, last week a raccoon helped itself to a delicious chicken dinner. Coop has since been fortified, but the coon got all seven chickens...
One of our EEs was the first of our five girls to lay. She started at 21 weeks. Our BA, SLW, and other EE all started within a few weeks of that. Our bantam cochin took her own sweet time and just started at 40 weeks. We'd about given up on her.
Yeah, I got a response from the seller who included a message from the Department of Homeland Security about delays in packages shipped from overseas. Due to increased security measures on air cargo post-9/11, many packages are sent via ship, so it could take up to 10 (!!!) weeks. I'm going to...
So excited! I ended up ordering a Skelter from a UK seller on eBay (it doesn't appear to be sold in the US) as the process seemed the easiest. I just got a notification that it has already been shipped! I can't wait to get it in the mail. With international shipping and today's exchange...
Thank you, thank you, thank you! The Skelter is such a brilliant idea--I'm surprised it isn't more readily available. I'm ordering one today for sure. And that spiral egg holder is so cool looking! I may have to buy one of those as well. :-)
I remember seeing a photo a while back of somebody's wire egg basket, where you put the new eggs in the top of a chute that spirals down to the bottom, where you can remove the oldest eggs. Does this description ring a bell with anyone?? I've searched for the thread/picture but can't find it...
Hello, fellow Oaklander! I'm up near Montclair. You? Thanks for the info about feed. I'm due for a feed run pretty soon so maybe I'll check out Concord Feed this next time. Mike's has worked out okay so far (and it seems like the closest place), but the staff is definitely not very...
Hi all --
Long-time lurker popping in to finally say hello to all of you Bay Area BYCers. We got our first chickens last August at the incessant begging of my nine-year-old daughter: two EEs, one SLW, one BA, and a tiny little frizzled bantam cochin, three of whom have just started laying...
We have a banty frizzled cochin in with our EEs, BA, and SLW. Drizzle the frizzle is tiny but is at the top of the pecking order anyhow. So I don't think the banty's small stature necessarily forbodes abuse, although ours are all hens so your rooster may make a difference.
