    Quail suddenly unable to walk??

It's unlikely that the feed is the problem. Still, I'll do as you suggest, dump it out & check for mold. My feeders are fill-at-the-top and eat from the bottom so the food is constantly replacing. Nevertheless... The paraplegic hen has been living in a cardboard box in our dining room for two...

    Quail suddenly unable to walk??

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I have been planning to build a grow-out cage that could serve that purpose. However, that cage exists only in my head at this point so, unfortunately, I don't yet have another cage to move her to. As a result of this I'll move the timeline up but that...

    Quail suddenly unable to walk??

I had a hen die about 8 days ago. She was weak & unable to stand. Today, when I opened the door to one of the pens, another hen was lying with her legs stretched out behind her. She seemed alert but couldn't seem to move her legs. She flapped her wings a little when she saw I was watching her...

Adding in 2 or 3 more females?

How many birds depend on your reasons for owning them and the size of your cage. But, as far as integration into a flock without too much drama, I'd think that more is better. One male can easily service 4 hens. I've seen that some experienced quail breeders suggest adding new birds at night to...

    lost another quail :(

Cool! Another West Coaster... I'm in the Central Valley about 65 miles due east of San Francisco and 30 miles south of Stockton. I've already got quail, so I'm not looking for more at present. My post was offering advice & thoughts to another BackYard Chickens person. When I was getting set...

    lost another quail :(

I should have more clearly specified was referring to local availability... If someone is looking for live chicks or fertilized eggs that can be picked up within driving distance rather than having them shipped.

    lost another quail :(

Availability may vary a lot depending on where in the US you may live. I'm in N. California and I had to drive 50 miles to get to a breeder than had the unmixed Brown Jumbo quail I wanted. Caledon are, likely, rarer. Interestingly, two of my hens lay blue eggs. I'd assumed they'd all lay eggs...

    Egg Breakage

An update... I visited our local feed store and bought a bag of chicken feed crumbles for laying hens. It has a whopping 4.5% calcium content (but only 16% protein). I fed my quail that for a day then switched them a 50/50 mix of higher protein, low-calcium, crumble turkey feed and the chicken...

    lost another quail :(

On the oil pans... I found they were WAY cheaper at the auto supply store. I got a polished metal pan, 36" x 24" for under $15. On the high mortality rate... The first round of chicks I found a local grower that sells day-old, Jumbo Brown chicks. So, I bought 20 of those rather than ordering...

    Placement of Water Cups

I've had my cage in use for a couple of months. I'm noticing that the placement of the watering cups at the end of the cage with wire above, below, and on that wall of the cage has helped create a low-maintenance way to keep the water cleaner. My quail constantly dirty their water by leaving...

    Quail Coop and Aviary Questions

For a time I had two males & ten females in one cage. The result was that the more-dominant male essentially scalped the less-dominant male. The poor loser had a dime-sized hole pecked really deep in the top of his head - bloody mess - I had to cull him. Now I have my birds separated, top &...

    Egg Breakage

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the thoughts. These are jumbo brown coturnix. And, yes, two of the three partially crushed eggs were laid in a high traffic spot where the birds travel to and from the sandbox. I'm using turkey feed crumbles because I've not found a lot of high protein game...

    Egg Breakage

Our quail hens are almost 7 weeks old and beginning egg production. First egg was a week ago. Now, with 10 hens, we're getting 4-5 eggs a day. Hopefully, that count will rise as the days go by. However, we're encountering an unexpected problem - egg breakage. Out of a total of about 12 eggs...

About to get quail, tips needed

My suggestions: 1) Spend some time on YouTube watching quail "how to" videos. Lots of quail farmers (large & small) have left useful info covering a wide range of topics. Personally, I like the posts of a guy that uses "Slightly Redneck" as his channel name. But there are lots of others. 2)...

    Quail bedding or wire?

The lighting system has two elements. The lights are inexpensive kitchen cabinet-type LEDs. Four linkable lights are attached to the underside of the boards running lengthwise across the tops of each cage. Separately, I purchased an outdoor controller switch with a daylight sensor. The...

my thieving otter eggs are in the incubator- need photos of setups please

I used a 10" heating plate for 20 chicks. I lost one. The plate seemed adequate and the chicks seemed to self-regulate warmth after just a few days by spending time under and then out of the plate area.
