    Bumble BUTT

I know this is weird but I have a rooster that seems to have a bumble in his vent. I’ve soaked it and removed the plug several times. It looks raw and bleeding after I remove it. I have been treating him for vent gleet and using an athletes foot cream daily. Eventually the fecal plug forms and...

Does my rooster have vent gleet

Got knocked off. I was saying he has a whole coop to himself. I kept him inside last night because I washed him and he was wet. I have treated him a number of times with Ivermectin and don’t see parasites on him. I’ve also put Vaseline on his legs for mites. He’s much better today because of...

Does my rooster have vent gleet

Thanks so much for your response. Good advice. He spends the day in the greenhouse where he isn’t bothered and comes out to see the girls when no other roos are around. I have a very large double walk in coop and he sticks to himself in

Does my rooster have vent gleet

I will take pictures tomorrow and send. I don't know how old he is though he is probably old -- maybe 5-7 years old? His legs are old and scabby looking and he's getting picked on by young roos. He spends all day alone in the greenhouse. I feed layer mash, scratch with lots of BOSS. Treats are...

Does my rooster have vent gleet

My rooster has been unwell for at least a month. It looks like he is impacted with feces. I have soaked his bottom and removed the plug and sprayed him with athlete’s foot medication once a day. He recovers well for a couple days. Tonight I removed another plug of feces and it appeared to have...

Chicken had broken soft-shelled egg inside her; likely impacted crop. Need guidance before it's too late.

Did you try to flush her with water? If so how did you do it. I have a tiny hen sitting in a bath right now. She expelled half a soft shell egg. I may try that tomorrow if recommended. Tonight I’ll keep her warm.

    Do I have enough ventilation?

I should add that my coop is almost all hardwire except for one wall. I’m in the southern Appalachian mountains. GA. It can get to 9 degrees or lower in a rough winter.

    Do I have enough ventilation?

My vents are at the roof line. There are roosting bars as high up as the vents. This means chickens get direct air currents in winter. Wouldn’t they know to go below the vents if it was too cold? I put up 1-2 layers of curtains over the mostly open coop design. I also have plexiglass on half...

Comment by 'Attila the Hen' in article 'Do Poultry Mourn Over The Loss Of A Flock Mate?'

I ask myself: do they feel fear, pleasure, companionship, trust, distrust, distress, joy and other feelings? The answer is yes they do. Why wouldn’t I concede they feel loss and sorrow? Personally, I believe the root of cruelty to animals is the misguided belief that humans are superior to all...

Beautiful stories. I’ve seen turkey moms mourn the death of their chicks. My story isn’t one of death but one that demonstrates compassion perhaps? One of my chickens became paralyzed and unable to walk. Another had the same problem a week later. I put them together even though they didn’t...

Comment by 'Attila the Hen' in article 'Chicken Behavior The Ignorant Gal's Guide To Things No Sane Person Would Tell You About Chickens'

Beautifully written and hysterically funny. Loved reading the article. I haven’t actually had that poop experience. It’s the nasty black runny ones I hate. Either way there’s lot’s of poop with chickens and you learn to live with it on your shoes, porch hands etc.

Review by 'Attila the Hen' in article 'How Much Room Do Chickens Need?'

Good article. Now I feel more comfortable with my set up. My birds are out free ranging all day. I’ve recently added more perches as the flock nearly doubled this year with those broody hens. Having an electronic door really makes life easier especially in the mornings. I still check nightly to...

    Help! Surprise baby chicks

I absolutely would allow the mother to raise it. She’s already done all the work. Plus she will make sure it’s integrated into the flock. I don’t separate my mothers. They can take care of themselves. However mine free range so they stay in the coop as long as they need to and everyone is...

    Swollen eye treated

I was doing it twice a day but she’s with the flock now and has been. This means I can’t catch her in the morning as they free range. I think she will be okay. It’s just going slowly. There appears to be a little bit of pus though I can’t be sure it isn’t an ulcerated eye. She has been very...

    Swollen eye treated

Just an update on hen. She is doing well in general although there is still some infection in her eye. I clean it once a day and apply ointment. It is not really swollen any longer. Her appetite is good and she tolerates me bringing her in each evening for treatment and snacks.

    Swollen eye treated

Yes I could not find anything in the stores I tried. The hen seems pretty well in herself so I will wait a little longer. Got some pus out last night. I’m keeping a close eye on her. Thanks again for your responses.
