When we went out to the coops this morning, we were surprised by baby chicks:loveOne of them was sadly not alive but the other seems to be thriving. Sneaky hen must’ve been hiding her eggs!:idunno I’ve owned chickens for quite some time and raised them all from a few days old but never hatched anything myself. I have no clue what to do or where to start. Do I take the baby away and raise it myself? Do I let mama take care of it? Will the other birds hurt it? This is my largest coop and there are about 35 hens and 1 rooster. What about food and water? I am running out now to get medicated starter feed. I am open to any and all advice. Thank you!!

Move the hen and the chick to a separate area. Let the hen raise the chick. What are you feeding your chickens? If you are feeding them flock raiser then the chick can eat that too.

I absolutely would allow the mother to raise it. She’s already done all the work. Plus she will make sure it’s integrated into the flock. I don’t separate my mothers. They can take care of themselves. However mine free range so they stay in the coop as long as they need to and everyone is already out and about.
I confess I put water and food within easy reach even when they are sitting.
