Sorry, I forgot to mention that they have plenty of water: two water dishes of their own and two bird baths. There's enough water to give them webbed feet!
Thanks for replying everyone! To clear up a few things: Fiona and my three other chickens roam in the back yard, which is not overly big (nor overly small). They have a small hen house/coop with a couple of separate nesting boxes. There is not room enough for eggs to go missing or for sneaky...
Since a week or two one of my four chickens, a one and a half year-old Isa Brown hen, seems to be eating her eggs. At least I think she is. She displays her usual laying behaviour before she disappears into one of the nesting boxes. When I go check a little while later, there is no egg! Part of...
One of my point-of-lay Silkie pullets has roundworms and I have bought Kilverm to treat her with. However, it doens't say on the package how many days I need to give her the medication. Does anyone have any experience with Kilverm?
Thanks!!!
Thanks for all the replies everyone! I am still not sure now whether I have a rooster or a hen. I always thought that roosters didn't nest...?
Anyway, here are a couple more photos, perhaps they will help?
The first one is a close up of the chick. Here she/he is 13 weeks old.
The second one...
Simply gorgeous!
I am thinking of building a coop myself. If you don't mind me asking... where can I get the plans/design for this beautiful coop?
Thanks!
I have two Rhode Island X chicks of about 13 weeks old. One of them has started making nests in the henhouse, so my (obvious?) conclusion was that this one is a hen, but a friend who has a lot of chickens thinks that this particular chick is a male (based on looks etc.) So... am I right or am I...
to Back Yard Chickens from Australia! Hope you'll find this site useful. Silkies are very broody and friendly little chickens. i have two of them and they make great mums!
Thank you everyone. I was reluctant to dip my hen in (cold) water and it seems I was right to be. I'll try the hutch thing or perhaps continue to put her outside a few times a day.
Your advice is very helpful!
My Silkie is very broody, so an acquaintance of mine suggested that I dip her bottom in some lukewarm water to instantly "cure" her of being broody. It seems a bit harsh to me and I doubt that it will work, but perhaps there is some truth to it after all? Who can advise me, please? Many thanks!
My Silkie Daisy has hatched two Isa Brown eggs and is now a VERY proud and loving mum. I am wondering though, when does the yellow chick colour start to change, can anyone tell me please? Thank you!
Many thanks for the replies! I will give each of them a go. In fact I am boiling a couple of eggs at this moment, I have borrowed some golf balls from my husband and I have a jar of mustard in the house. Hopefully either or all of these tips will work.
One of my Isa Brown hens, Hazel, has started laying a few days ago, but she eats her eggs. Fair enough, they are after all her eggs, but it makes an awful sticky mess in the henhouse and adds quite a bit of time to my daily round of morning chores. Does anyone know if this is normal behaviour...
First of all, I am very happy your chickens are safe and well, that's the most important thing!
My solution to lighting the henhouse is very simple; I have bought a couple of small led lights that run on batteries. You put them on the floor or stick them to the walls and all you have to do to...
My Silkie was so broody that I have given her three Isa Brown eggs to hatch. It's been about five days now and she is as happy as a lark, even in 33 degree heat (which is 91.4 Fahrenheit). Hopefuly soon we'll have a couple of chicks walking around. I hope even more that one of them will be a...
Here I was thinking I was very original... I'm glad to hear other hens are enjoying the benefits of laying in litter boxes as well. It sounds like I soon need to buy a second one, hopefully for only $9.99...
I have a "high" henhouse with a run underneath, because at first I only had a couple of Isa Browns. When I adopted some Silkies I realised that I needed a "low" nesting box for emergencies. I am usually home all day, so I can lift the Silkies into the "high" henhouse when they need to lay an egg...
