What predator only decapitates, doesn't eat

Or attack happened between midnight and 5am...still no sign of the 3 hens who are unaccounted for.

What predator only decapitates, doesn't eat

What baffles me is that our three dogs didn't hear anything happening and I didn't either. My bedroom window was open and facing a part of the yard where 3 of the hens died. How can something chase 7 hens out of their henhouse and kill at least 4 of them without making any kind of ruckus? If I'd...

What predator only decapitates, doesn't eat

We will be taking a break from raising chickens afte this traumatic event...I cannot, in good faith, get more chickens until I can be sure they are as safe from harm as possible. The scene we uncovered in the pre-dawn hours this morning broke my heart. Today I didn't get greeted by the girls...

What predator only decapitates, doesn't eat

I am a bit hopeful that the 3 missing hens return...they were feisty, young and I could totally see them getting away. I looked all over the yard and couldn't find them. They have gone over the fence, but not sure we live on a busy road. Didn't see any dead hens near the road this AM. Will...

What predator only decapitates, doesn't eat

All seven of my hens were killed last night. Only found 4 in the yard...three of which had no heads. The three that were not found...I wish they would find their way home if they escaped. No sign of a predator...no tracks, fur, scat, etc. I am heartbroken.

RIP Sweet Hen - Respiratory Infection?

Thanks. It WAS NOT Gladys who passed away. That's what surprised me most. Gladys is hanging in there - my old girl. One of the younger hens passed away. So sad. I'll keep an eye on the other girls to see if anything else is changed with them.

RIP Sweet Hen - Respiratory Infection?

I posted a few weeks back about my older hen, Gladys, who was lethargic/sitting around/breathing heavily but still eating and drinking properly. She's progressed over the past few weeks, but still occasionally will "rest" in the hen house. Today I walked out to see what the other hens were...

5+ year old hen w/chest callous, swollen chest, labored breathing

Update: Gladys is eating/drinking fine and is by no means a "wilting flower" when it comes to her size. She continues to prefer resting in the hay in the run v. cruising the backyard with the others. She stood up and came over to eat some bird seed treats I gave them. She keeps her tail tucked...

5+ year old hen w/chest callous, swollen chest, labored breathing

I am pretty sure it is not her crop, but will take a closer look. Went out there this morning and she is resting in the hay in the coop. She got up and drank water when I put fresh water out and managed to find a worm to eat when I moved some dirt around. She doesn't seem to be in any visible...

5+ year old hen w/chest callous, swollen chest, labored breathing

Gladys, the last of our original trio of barred rock hens, has been increasingly lethargic over the past week or so. She is eating and drinking fine. We have seeing her "resting" more during the day by sitting down in the yard. When I returned from a 5-day trip to GA, my partner mentioned that...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

We just finished our 3rd night of doctoring our hen's foot. Here's a picture of our supplies: The spot where we lanced the abscess looks really good..just an empty pocket of skin with no puss coming out. We soaked the foot pad in a betadine and epsom salt bath before we started digging in...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Just got done cleaning out our hen's wound again this evening... The wrap stayed nice and snug (without being too tight) and kept the wound dry and safe overnight and all day today. When we unwrapped the wound it looked clean and dry. We soaked the foot in a betadine/epsom salt bath for about...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Our hen seems no worse for the wear this AM. She's moving around easily with her foot wrapped and doesn't appear to be slowed down by it at all. The wrap is still quite clean and dry so we are going to wait until evening to doctor the wound again - once she is calm and ready to roost. I'll...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Ruth - Thanks for the tip. We will check the dressing and the wound tomorrow AM. I think we'll soak it good again and try to get a bit more out of the wound on the bottom of the foot. After that, we'll probably go in through the top swollen area. It appears that the top swollen area between...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Thanks so much for the picture and descriptions. Bert and I just performed this procedure for the FIRST time tonight on one of our hens. The top of her foot, between the toes, was quite swollen almost like a large blister. The swollen area was soft to the touch and slightly warm. Here's a...

    Old Hen - Can't Walk

Yea. She seems to have perked up. She's moulting and I think she's just worn out from growing new feathers. She's got a lot growing on the back of her neck and she stands up and stretches her neck up tall to loosen up those new feathers. She is eating and drinking well and is keeping up and...
