Thank you so much everyone. I got them from McMurray, because one member of our "egg co-op" wants colored eggs & McM breeds for that feature, not show or conformation. Maybe my 2 boys are just inspired by the Rhode Island Red roo who lives in the next pen.
This is my first time raising Ameraucanas, and I know these chickens have some unusual traits, but I haven't read anything about early sexual maturity. I have 2 cockerels and 7 pullets; they're 11-1/2 weeks old. Both the guys have already started crowing, one last week, one today. I'm told...
PS: I've raised other chickens, but this is my first time with Ameraucanas. No other cockerel/rooster I've had has ever started crowing more than a week before his "sisters" started laying.
The Marine Corps recruiter, who signed up the young man down the road, told him she thought the hen had to sit on the eggs for a while to ripen them before they were ready to eat. I hope she knows more about warrioring than chicken raising.
Please please let us know how this goes. I've been so discouraged by the "cruelty" claims, I hadn't even thought about ether. How difficult is it to get and use, anyway.
