I'm really second guessing myself and having a hard time with the decision that I made to put down my chicken. Obviously, this is not an emergency, but I was hoping that some of you that have more experience could weigh in and help either reassure me that I did the right thing, or let me know...
I do have her quarantined in a small area by herself in my "chicken hospital" (a corner in the barn with hay, food and water) she can still hear the other hens and spends most of her day chatting to them though.
That's part of what's really weird in my opinion - I've lost other chickens to egg...
Good to know, I'll skip the bath!
I will weigh her as soon as I get home. About the tube feeding: She's eating a lot and drinking water on her own right now, although still skinny- would she benefit from tube feeding?
She's very interested when I put down food or change her water - thats...
Thanks for the replies!
I did examine her and the her abdomen is not swollen- in she's mostly skin and bones right now - her breast bone is very prominent and she is much much smaller and lighter than even my smallest healthy hens. Her feathers are in good shape - no mites and they are not...
About six months ago she was in similar shape - she was walking in circles and falling over a lot. I just kept my eye on her and didn't really do anything special and her walking improved. Thats why I thought she had hurt her leg initially even though I couldn't feel anything wrong. After a few...
Hi All- my hen is still suffering today. I took a video of her walking to see if that might shed some light on whats going on.
She's still eating and is bright and alert, but she can hardly walk. Here's a link to the video...
Kathy, thanks for the reply, she has not been de-wormed. Actually I have never de-wormed my hens, and I've had them for about 5 years, should I be doing that regularly?
I have a kitchen scale that I can weigh her on and I would be willing to try tube feeding.
Her poop looks about the same...
I had to separate my rooster from my hens because he was too aggressive and I had hens whose wings looks much, much worse.
Over the last six months the worst looking Rhode Island Red has completely regrown her feathers, while an easter egger still has an almost completely bare back so it seems...
Hi All, I've been searching the forums, but I can't seem to find the answer for whats wrong with my hen. I have a 4 year old barred rock that started acting 'wobbly' about six months ago. Our rooster was being too aggressive with the hens at the time, so I thought he might have injured her leg...
Thank you for the response.
I don't think she has been pecked - and oddly after I clean her up her vent isn't red or irritated looking. I just came back from the feed store and I bought corid, duramycin-10 (tetracycline hydrochloride), epsom salts and I picked up some tums and yogurt at the...
Hi all, I have a year and a half old Dominique hen who is in some trouble and I'm not sure what is wrong. Back in December she had a prolapse which I was able to clean up and push back in. Since then she has had a poopy butt and I have cleaned and bathed her several times. It seems that she is...
Thanks for all the help, guys! Still not convinced about the production red part, but I guess time will tell. He is a very sweet chicken though, and I think a rooster would be a nice addition to my flock. Hopefully he will get along with my older hens when the time comes. I did think that (s)he...
Hi all- this is my first time raising chicks and I wanted to know if any one has any guesses if I've got a pullet or cockerel. I have three easter eggers, bought from the feed store, which were all supposed to be female, but I have my doubts about this one. I've named him/her Rooster.
What...
