Lancaster County Chickens
I have 9 chickens in my backyard in Lancaster county. Five of those chickens are a cross between Rhode Island Reds and White Leghorns, and the other four are Barred Plymouth Rocks.
Facts about Rhode Island Reds: Rhode Island Reds are one of the most popular dual...
I have two young roosters that have just gotten big enough to be in with the rest of my chickens, and I was wondering how old a rooster has to be to breed with a hen. And if there are any other things that I should know before breeding chickens to get my own fertilized eggs.

I have barred plymouth rocks and a white leghorn/ rhode island red cross. I have gotten some very densly spotted ones one day, and then the next day they are clean of spots. Some even have distinct rings of spots on them which seem very strange to me.
The main thing I would like to...
I am 13, and new to the chicken business as well, and I have just been tossing a little scratch into their pens for a little treat. I also use scratch to augment the expensive layers mash.
Today I got an egg that as covered heavily with brownish red spots all over the egg. When cleaning the egg you can even scratch off some of them. There was even a noticable ring of it near the bottom. Is this a sign of too much of a vitamin, of a vitamin deficiency? Or is it something else?

I have nine chickens with a coop and a considerable amount of fenced in area for them to roam. It didn't take long for them to eat every green thing in sight. In the spring I am planning to fence off a corner of their pen and plant vegetables and greens for me and the chickens. I will let the...
I spent a lot of money to get chickens and they have just started to lay eggs, but I am seeing that the feed is expensive and I dont think that it will pay for itself. Are there anyways that I can lower the cost of having chickens?
I get mine at a feed mill (Good's Feed Mill) for around 8.00 for 50 lbs. in Lancaster, PA. I also augment my feed with chicken scratch (cracked corn and grain) that is about 7.50 for 50 lbs.
