    11 chickens missing, 2 dead

I appreciate all the concern and thoughfulness! I'm sure any harsh comments were made out of the care of the hens so I take nothing personal. On a different note, I think I solved the mystery. My dog was barking this afternoon so I went to investigate. There were two large hound dogs in the...

    11 chickens missing, 2 dead

Three of the missing showed back up this morning. Walking around in the daylight did show lots more feathers, but no chicken bodies other than the two original so 8 are still unaccounted for. I don't blame my husband at all, I completely blame myself. I knew I was late and could have called...

    11 chickens missing, 2 dead

It's been dark here for a few hours but I just went outside to close to chicken coop doors because I was late getting home and my husband forgot (although the chickens are my responsibility and not his). I turned on the outside lights and can usually see inside our chicken coop but didn't this...

    Red Mites!!

This afternoon when I went to collect eggs I grabbed the side of the nest box and came away with a handful of red mites! I saw where they were hiding between the cracks in the nest box, but didn't see them anywhere else. I hope that the infestation isn't anywhere else! I've never had this...

    Who's laying the eggs?

Yep, Blue Kote the ones you aren't sure about and there eggs will have the Blue Kote on them. I'm assuming you could do the same thing with food coloring too though.

How old on average are BOs when they start to lay?

Mine were about 20-21 weeks when they started. I noticed the doing "egg squats" about a week or so before I found my first egg. They layed every other day for the first 6 weeks or so, then started laying almost everyday. now they're almost a year old and lay about 4 eggs a week.

Putting 'fake eggs' in the chicken coop

I used golf balls as well. I put a couple in the nest box before my hens started laying. When they did start laying, they all the eggs were in the nest box.

welp I did it. I culled my beautiful roosters.

I had seven roosters with my first big batch of chickens that I bought one spring....I couldn't keep them all either, they drove us all crazy. I ended up trading them at our local mill for a couple of pullets this past fall. I know that their fate is probably someones plate, and I'm ok with...

    Stop Vent Pecking?

I think that I found the pecker...unfortunatelyl she is my most beautiful and best layer! I separated her from the rest of the hens. How long should it before the feathers on the victim hens grow back? I have a couple with very bald vents!

    Stop Vent Pecking?

I thought that my chickens my be prolapsing, then I thought that a predator was getting into the coop, but then I realized that they are pecking each other to death. I have lost 4 chickens to what I think is vent pecking....I find them dead with gaping bloody vents! I checked my other chickens...

    Is it a predator?

Thanks for your help. The hens have been laying...they haven't slowed down at all. I had 11 and was getting 4-8 eggs a day. Now I only have 7 hens, but still got 7 eggs today.

    Why are my hens dying?

I'm not at all mad or offended, don't worry The chickens are kept in a 8x8 run with a henhouse inside the run. The run is about 6 feet tall, i can walk inside of it. The back wall is completly plywood, and the rest of the run has plywood on the bottom 2 1/2 feet. I don't know how a racooon...

    Is it a predator?

I've had 4 birds die in the past 2 1/2 weeks, one at a time a few days apart. The only wounds I can find are gaping bloody holes at their vent. When the first hen died, I thought maybe it was prolapse, but would 4 of my birds prolapse so closely together? Could it be a predator? What would...

    Why are my hens dying?

Quote: The birds that have died are red star and buff orpington/welsummer crosses. They are between 6-9 months old...all laying. They all seem perfectly fine, until one day I find that they have died. The poop all seems normal, sometimes a little runny, but rarely. I have no idea what...

    Why are my hens dying?

I started out with 11 hens, 3 red stars, 3 buff orpingtons, and 5 buff/welsummer crosses. About 2 1/2 weeks ago I found a red star dead in the coop, her intestine was also hanging out. I figured it was prolapse and a fluke, but a week later, it happened to a 2nd red star. Later the same...
