Who's laying the eggs?

I've got four different breeds (4 hens total). I'm wondering how to tell who's laying the eggs. I know my Polish's eggs, they're all white-ish & kinda smallish. I've also got a standard Silver-laced Wyandotte, a Black sex-link (aka black star), and a white bantem cochin. According to the breed site, all three of these lay brown eggs. So far, I've got 2 hens laying brown eggs, one is fairly dark & probably the size of a AA egg from the store, the other egg is slightly smaller, & a little lighter. I've been assuming they're from the SLW & the BSL, but I've noticed the little cochin is laying on the nest from time to time & she also seems to have lost some weight. (I think she's molting, as there's white, fluffly feathers everywhere.) Will I be able to tell the difference if she ever lays (she's over a year now, and I don't think I've gotten any eggs from her, last summer they were all white)? Is there a way to tell who's laying the larger egg, short of stalking my birds all day?

Do hens lay when they're molting? If not, how long between molting & laying? So far, I've only noticed random feathers everywhere when they molt, will they ever loose large patches of feathers, like my dog does when he sheds his winter coat?

The darker one is probably from the black sex link. The other one is hard to say. If the egg is really small, then it's probably from the cochin. Larger, but not as large as the darker one, probably the SLW. If your cochin girl is molting, then she's probably not laying.

As for how long do they take a break from laying while molting, it's an individual thing. I had some that went 4 months with no eggs, and some that went a little over a month.

I read on another site that you can put some food coloring on the pullet's vent. I will be "absorbed" into the vent. Then when she lays the egg will be stained with that color.

You could put a different color on each hen, then you would know!

Sounds weird, doesn't it?

Do this, get some Blu Kote and spray the butt of the one your least sure of. Trust me their eggs will have the Blu Kote on it. Just don't spray to much and wear gloves this stuff stains anything.

You could ask but they'll all take credit for the biggest egg, even the bantam. Hens are very competitive.

Hope you figure it out

Yep, Blue Kote the ones you aren't sure about and there eggs will have the Blue Kote on them. I'm assuming you could do the same thing with food coloring too though.

Hmmm.... never thought of that! Will I be able to eat the Blu-Koted egg? I think I might try it (if I can catch those two, that is.)

I think while I've got them caught, I'll try to clip some feathers, as they have poop sticking to the lower feathers. Thanks for the suggestions.
