*UPDATE: Last night they went inside all on their own. It seems simply posting on the forum did the trick :)*
Help! My pullets won't go into the hen house at night. They huddle up to sleep in a corner of their run, which is fenced but definitely not predator proof. The hen house has an...
This is probably not terribly helpful, but I had pretty much the same situation last year. Out of six chicks, five grew up to be good layers, and then there was Little Yoko, who finally [I think] laid an egg around 12 months old. And then she laid another one about two months later. I'm...
I've got a flock of 16 month old chickens who are molting, along with 4 month old pullets who are just starting to lay. Will increasing the protien in the food to help out the molters harm the pullets?
How long do you dunk them? I tried this yesterday, and about an hour later I checked and saw her sitting on a roost instead of in the nesting box. But then later that day she was back to her old tricks. It doesn't sound like there's must of a technical procedure here, but maybe I did it...
This cracked me up! I've been having the same problem, and managed to resist all season. Until today, when I had too much time on my hands at work and ended up looking at chick schedules for local feed stores. I'm fairly certain I'm not going to make it home tonight without new chicks.
Hahaha, it took me a minute to figure out who Heather was. You're right, we can probably just forget her!
Little Yoko was the only one who got a name--she was the apparent social outcast from the beginning. It's hard not to root for the underdog.
Five of my six girls have been laying fairly regularly for the past three months, and I was beginning to think there was no hope for little Yoko. Today, I'm pretty sure she proved me wrong. Either that, or someone is seriously underachieving!
Do chickens who seem to lay consistently-sized...
I raised six chicks in a bathtub of a bathroom that I don't use. The tub had glass shower doors, so they were not able to escape; I hung a light in it and put wood bedding in the tub. It worked very well, so long as you don't mind your friends laughing at you just a little bit!
You'd be surprised what telling folks about your chicken dreams can do for you in the cost-cutting department. You never know what random junk your friends' parents may have lying around their garages! Just by talking about it, I found that I had co-workers that had feeders and waterers, even...
I'm having the same problem with one of my 34-week-old Australorps. Five of them have been laying for three months now, but not number six. They all seem happy and healthy...
