My hens acting the same way...weird. I cant see any symptoms. But she just seems spaced out. the others are picking on her a bit, seems like they're trying to get her moving. maybe worms, but shes pretty young. 2 months laying, she's the one the lays late and maybe skips a day from time to time...
We are in the Willamette Valley so we usually dont get much snow...so we used bird netting on top. Its light weight. I wonder though if shiny ribbons strung across would work too.
I agree about animal control. How about some rock salt in a shot gun for the Beagles. Just stand watch and pop them a couple of times. Won't kill them. But will sting. Then tell the owners if they come on you property you'll start using buck shot. Do it in writing. Certified Letter. That should...
I understand the sentiment about the dog. But be careful. There was just a story in our area about a chicken owner that killed a dog who attacked his chickens and now is getting prosecuted for killing the dog. We need some laws that make it expensive to dog owners whos dogs kill chickens. Its...
We've had cold rain here and they seem to love it! They are 10 weeks old and seem to "take showers" in the rain, and them come in the coop to warm up. Funny!
One thing about Mom's is that you can never change them. They may change on their own, but no matter how hard we want them to be as we need them to be, they never will be...sigh...
I've learned this over the years and keep having to be reminded of it.
Thank You for the sacrifice your family is...
My 9 week old chicks go in the coop at night as soon as the sun sets but not before. I was in changing water about 8 and hoping the girls would stay in, but the kept a sentry outside, chirping loudly. First sentry was Twink, then she changed places with Daisy, very funny. So I walked down the...
I've been thinking of all the sayings we use in everyday speech that are related to raising chickens. Put all your chicken sayings down.
I just heard on another thread, "Birds of a feather, flock together"
The other night I was watching out the window and saw a male quail standing gaurd over his hens who were in my garden. He kept his eyes trained on my chickens. It was almost like he was gaurding them as well. It is nice to have another look out. How do wild quail and chickens interact?
We had a heat wave a while back and mine were panting too. We have a covered run that has shade and I put there water in the run. They seemed to do fine. We have three windows and a fan in the coop too.
Oh this is trouble. How old did you say you girl/boy is??? Mine is just about 8 weeks and looks the same. The other GLW isnt as red...

So we got a small run done to let the girls out because of the heat. We put some plywood over it, but it didnt cover the whole top. I thought it would be OK, but then a huge hawk, I think a northern harrier, flew right over!!! I jerry rigged a cover for the day, but today its gonna be more...
