I've had this door for 8 years, in Minnesota, and it is still going strong! I recommend sheltering the door with some type of covering or roof during icy/snowy weather to keep it closing tight. The photocell is still working and I haven't lost the magnet yet! Great customer service response when...
My Welsummer hen is about 4 1/2 months old. Was vaccinated at hatchery. Grew up fine with flock mates. Suddenly, she is pigeon-toed, injured or has Marek's disease. She can't walk without stepping on her own feet, losing her balance and tipping forward or sideways. She uses her wing to balance...
Thought I'd update my post after 8 years :) I now let my chickens free range all day, every day. Have only lost one to a predator and none to dogs. The dog referenced in the original post was eventually "taught" to leave them alone by a chicken itself. I tried to supervise a...
YES!! This just happened to one of our hens last summer. The egg was huge, so I brought it in the house to show my grandson what I thought would be a double- or triple-yolker. Totally shocked when another egg was inside! Luckily, I had filmed it. His second grade teacher showed the video in...
I have a Cuckoo Maran and a Buff Orpington that both hatched chicks. Each one had at least two, and there were six altogether. The problem is, I housed them in a small pen, and one of the hens killed a chick this morning. I have another pen set up, but I can't figure out which chicks belong to...
I purchased some birds labeled Americanas from Hoover's. I requested 5 pullets, but I believe one of them is a roo. Can anyone verify that this roo is, indeed, an Americana (Easter Egger)?
And, for good measure, will I be getting colored eggs from these girls?
Thanks for the info. I did end up moving her into a screened-off part of the coop, but she was very upset and tried to get out so much that she scratched open a spot on her comb :( I did put her back on the eggs and she seemed to have settled down a bit when I left last night.
Have my first broody hen - a cochin. There are 3 other hens and a rooster in the flock. The cochin is lowest in pecking order, and even now when she gets up to eat, etc. the others (even the roo) chase her around and peck at her.
How will they react when the chicks hatch? Will the cochin...
Well, my cochin went broody about two weeks ago. She stays on the eggs, now. She does get off the nest to poop and walk around a little, but the other birds bully her, so she doesn't stay off for long. I have started putting a little bowl of water and one of food in the nest box with here so she...
My 9 month old Cochin did this once before and is now doing it again. Unfortunately, instead of sitting on the 3 eggs laid in the nest box, she chose the 6 golf balls I left in another nest from when I was training them where to lay. It's only about 40-50 degrees in the coop (and -20 windchill...
My 9 month old Orpington rooster is picking the feathers out of his own cape (neck) in the front. Once in a while I'll see a hen peck at him, but not regularly.
There are only five birds (4 hens, 1 roo) in the coop which is kept heated to about 40 degrees during our sub-zero weather. It's...
My rooster is starting to do this as well. What's going on? I have a chicken block, oyester shell and grit feeders in the coop. They can go out in the run on "warm" days - I live in MN, so warm is 20 degrees or above. The coop is very large and there are only four hens and one rooster in it...
