I have a broody hen who needs chicks ASAP! She has been sitting for 3.5 weeks, and her eggs show no signs of hatching, poor girl. Looking for large fowl only. Thanks!

Two Broodies, One nest, Twenty-sumthin eggs

I'm so glad to have this forum to turn to when I have questions! I have a broody blue cochin who has been on eggs for 2 weeks, and now my black cochin has started sitting. They have both hatched out clutches in the past and have been good mothers. I have a little version of my big coop which...

How Old is your Oldest Chicken?

I have a barred rock who was passed down to me from an aunt. I don't know how old she is exactly, but she's at least 8, I'm guessing 9 or 10. Her poor feet are all swollen, but she's still the bossiest bird in the flock. Mean old Lulu....

Advice on how to repel your chickens/flock form eating hostas and other ornamental garden plants

I have one or two hens who love the hostas. I had also read that chickens would not eat them, but I just ended up digging each one up and moving them to the front yard to save them!

broiler feed - looking for a brand I can't recall the name of!

About a year ago I purchased a bag of poultry feed that was monochromatic with drawings of a duckling, a chick, and maybe a baby turkey or goose on it, and I've not been able to find it again. Does this description sound familiar to anyone? It was non medicated and for a mixed flock of young birds.

    barred rock chick?

Thanks everyone. It does have a light spot on it's head (more prominent when it was younger) and its cute, fuzzy behind is also light in color. I believe the comb is single, but it is small still.

Hey Gang! Whatcha think of my plans and Rooster issue?

Congratulations on your new flock! I can hear my rooster 1/2 mile down the road right now, but once the leaves are back on the trees (lots of trees here!) you can't hear him nearly as far away. Even now he's not loud enough to bother anyone. Have fun!

Broody hen in February (in Michigan!)

I've been reading through some older posts on broody hens in the winter, but I'm wondering if anyone has any input on my specific situation. I have an orpington hen who has successfully raised two previous batches of chicks for me (good mama!) and she has started hoarding eggs and pecking at...

    Barred rock flight height?

My rocks could fly over our 5 foot fence when they were younger (and lighter weight). They are great birds! I have a 9 year old barred rock who is so crotchety and mean, but so clever and curious still! I love her! Wing clipping is easy and harmless; I definitely recommend it if you want your...

How many people eat there chickens on this form

Quote: I will take a crack at answering this! I have never butchered or processed one of my birds. I am struggling with the thought of starting to due to a VERY crowded bachelor coop this year. My birds are dual purpose, and the cockerels are getting older, so the possibility of eating them...

Quote: I've never had cochin males, so I hadn't realized that. Thanks for the info! I guess I'll have to wait for a cockadoodle doo (or five).
