Squirrels - like other mammals - are not fond of hot pepper, sauce, powder, flakes, etc. And the nice thing about that when you have chickens is that it doesn't bother the birds.

I have not yet had chicks, but I remember someone saying that when they are real little they need some "traction" so newspaper is not good, that's why folks recommend paper towels. I'm thinking shelf liner may be as slick as newspaper. You could put a layer of paper towels over the shelf...
I've been following your progress, too. Great work! It's inspiring! I'm not sure I'll be able to get chickens this year but that's not stopping me from learning.

Genetic modification is not the same thing as breeding. GM is done in a lab then put into a chicken. Not the same thing as mating chickens in order to modify a breed.
Do you eat GMO foods?
Unless you eat only organic foods, the answer is - most likely. There has not been enough studies done to determine exactly what happens inside our bodies when we - or any animal - eats GMO's. The preliminary studies are not good.
Stay aware of this, keep informed...
Have you read the book "Chicken Tractor" by Andy Lee? That points out several different types of tractors and ways to use them. I'm not half way through it yet and I'm getting a lot out of it. Good Earth Publications, 1994.
What about composting? Do you have a compost bin? I know it would be frozen but most are made of wire mesh / hardware cloth or something similar that would keep out scavengers. I put compost in my bin all winter then it starts 'working' before you know it.
