I am new to the backyard chicken world but very excited! I ordered the girls from mypetchicken.com and received them on 2/23/11. I put a mirror in the brood box on day 6 and they were so cute! Here they are in order: (Lola) Buff Orpington, (Matilda) Barred Plymouth Rock, (Henrietta) White...
I installed mine yesterday and last night little red eyes were blinking next to the coop pop door. I am also curious to know if it works!
Have fun with your chickens
Really cute coop! What kind of predators do you have in your area? Chicken wire won't keep out anything that wants to snack on your precious chickens. I would like to suggest hardware cloth.
Have fun!
I am wondering the same thing. While the girls are in the run I can close up the pop door and paint. If I leave all the windows and door open I wonder if that is enough time for fumes to dissipate?
Maybe it is the roost bar? I have 5 chicks that are 10 weeks old and they were laying in a pile on the floor until this last weekend. I originally put in a 2x2 roost and they would look out the window during the day but not get on it at night. I switched to a 2x4 flat side up on Saturday and...
I got my roost done today for my 10 week old mix of girls ( buff Orp, barred rock, Easter egger, white leghorn, white silkie). Put a 2 x4 flat roost 5ft long and 3 1/2 ft high. I was excited all but the silkie were on it at bed time. she hasn't figured out the ramp yet to get inside the coop...
From what I have read the rule of thumb is 10sq feet per bird. As far as fencing I think it depends on the predator situation in your area.
Good luck and have fun with the chickens
This is the 4th day out for my mixed group (BR, BA, Leghorn. EE, Buff Orp, silkie). First night I had to crawl under the coop to get the EE and silkie . Day 2 they all waited in line by the ramp and waited to be picked up. Day 3 all but the silkie had made their way into the coop on their own ...
That BR looks like it might be a roo. My Matilda at 8 weeks old had a very small comb and no red at all. Here is a picture of her to explain it better.
