Terrific! I'm just looking for egg color, but eye candy hens would be a nice bonus! I've gone from a mixed flock to concentrating on Delawares, but I miss seeing a variety of egg colors in my basket.
Do roosters lose fertility over the winter? Kind of like how hens slow or stop egg production? I have a super sweet roo who might be 3 y.o. and I just candles some eggs at 7 days. They're all clear. I really wanted chicks from him. Should I give him a couple more weeks? Or is it soon...
My rooster, Chuck, started limping just over two weeks ago. One foot was swollen nearly twice the size of the other. But there was no sore or kernel like with bumblefoot. The little toe was crusty, but after scrubbing it looked okay. I soaked it daily in Epsom salts and have him Tylan 50...
Raccoons can chew through poultry wire. It's really only meant to contain chickens, not keep predators out. Dogs will grab by the neck too - as I'm learning with my latest rescue dog. She's killed two and grabbed a couple others and carried them around the yard like that. Raccoons wiped out...
I've seen barred tails like that go either way. If it has hatchmates, compare leg girth and posture. Is it holding itself upright and are it's legs on the thick side? Those are my go-to indicators. Feathers and combs can still be tricky at this age in some chicks.
This is my latest batch of chicks at 5 weeks. Two boys are obvious - red combs & real smutty on backs between shoulders. There's a 3rd boy in there who was mostly white like the girls, so I could only tell by comb color.
I have one pullet who is fluffing up and heaving like she's trying to bring something up. Her crop isn't full and she's too young to be laying - about 2 mos old now. She's eating, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas on what I can do to help her?
If anyone is looking for laying hens, I have 5 black Australorp hens available in Greenville. Trying to down size to just one type chicken per egg color, if that makes any sense. (I'm having a hard time separating their eggs and some of my Delwares' eggs.) 4 are around 1-1/2 yr old and 1 is 7...
Sending well wishes to Isaac! I got Chuck and Lady from Wekiva last year and I swear he looks just like Isaac. From what I've read about him, they inherited his sweet disposition too. <3
Awesome! I'll join the next round. Hopefully the weather will improve and the girls will be back at it soon. They went on strike almost immediately after I found out about this egg bomb. Go figure!
