WooHooo! Another broody! Now I get to choose which eggs to hatch. When you are picking ferile eggs to hatch from your flock, what things do you look for? Last time I just really picked 4 eggs at random from that day. This time I plan to include 2 eggs from my ee and maybe 1 or 2 others...
They are 3 weeks old. They are barnyard mix with a barred rock roo. I may need to get better pictures.
Black chick #1 ( I think roo, because his comb is red before any of the others)
Black Chick #2
Black chick #3 and yellow chick
My chicks are 2 weeks old and their mama is doing a great job taking care of them. She's been taking them outside regularly and even stands up to my dog when she gets too close. How long do hens usually take care of the chicks? How young is too young for them to be on their own if she lets...

Awwwww.... What kind is the hen? And
I think she's a bantam RIR or production red. I'm less excited about pruebred chickens and don't have the space to separate and breed. So my flock is a barnyard mix. I went to a local farmer who had lots of chickens and picked...
My broody hen Annabelle hatched her first clutch yesterday! I have 3 dark chicks and 1 yellow chick, from my mixed flock with a barred rock roo. Too cute!
I just set 3 eggs under my broody today. I expect they will be due Saturday June 4, the day before summer camp starts! (I'm an equestrian director at a camp in Illinois) The hen's name is Madame Zaroni. She's my second hen to go broody, my first batch is due next weekend!
All my chickens...
Candled the 4 eggs under my broody banty last night! All look like they are developing. This is my first hatch, I'm so excited! Mama has food and water very close to her and I can tell she's been eating and drinking. But she was pretty bony last night when I picked her up. It's only a week...
My chickens are free range, spending most of the day roaming around the barn and returning to the coop and nest boxes to lay. Up until about a week ago, I was getting 6-8 eggs a day from 9 hens. Now I'm only getting 4-5. I think they are probably just laying somewhere outside, but I can't...
Hello everyone!
I have 2 hens that have gone broody this week and I think I'm going to try letting them hatch a clutch for me. My flock is a group of mutts, with one bantam hen and the rest large fowl, including the rooster. Is it a good idea to try to hatch a bantam egg, considering daddy...
Just because it hasn't been mentioned yet...I'd place a call to the sheriff and let them know about the situation. It's always good to have some documentation if you end up needing it. And sometimes you can arrange for some extra drivebys during the day. They won't always do it, but I lived...
I've had my chickens for about three weeks and only 2 of the 9 are laying. They aren't laying in the yard, because they haven't been out of the coop until today. How long does it take for them to settle in? Is there anything I can do to reduce stress? They get layer pellets, oyster shell...
Wow! a neighbor suggested that to me too when I was talking to her about my girls lack of eggs. I've had 9 chickens for a month and only 2 are laying and those are only every other day. I guess I shouldn't have rolled my eyes at her. I'll have to try it now!
I'm joining the ranks of the addicted. I started with 9 hens a few weeks ago and I'm already thinking about 3 more chicks from the feed store March 1! I told myself I was going to learn with the adults first and think about chicks next spring. Oh well, when jumping in, it's best to jump with...
