I hear ya. I used to live in Santa Cruz and even after several years in Sac, I still can NOT handle the heat!! I love cold rainy days... Until this year. Now I've shocked everyone by being glad the rains are done!! I'll still complain bitterly when the temps jump up over a hundred. You...

The other problem with pool DE is the silica content. It's uber-high in the pool version and isn't safe (think of those silica packets that come in a box of shoes or whatever to prevent moisture - they flat out say Toxic, do not eat). There's alot less silica and like you said, its...

Oh yes, I've been building raised beds left and right. Had to plant the mandarin and peach tree in a raised bed too. No truck yet, though we really really need one. Luckily, the previos owners left a ginormous pile of top soil... I'm assuming they were planning to landscape with it at...
Guess it's time to introduce myself, as I'm pretty sure I haven't yet.
I'm Jen, and I live right on the edge of Roseville/Granite Bay/Orangevale. Bought our first (run-down, fixer) house last year, and I've been working hard to make my mini-farm. Unfortunately, the rockhard clay compressed...
Frogs huh? My girls are gonna have a field day this summer - we have hundreds of wild tree frogs! Crab is reserved solely for me.
CHICK RUGBY!!! I LOVE IT! My uncle is the coach for the U.S. rugby team - I'm gonna have to tell him about Chick Rugby now! It describes it so well!

OMG this sounds quite alot like me. Except add in the initiative to actually get things done. I spend significant hours at work making lists, doing mockups of various house projects on graph paper, researching EVERYTHING, redoing all the graph drawings, etc etc etc. But come time for...

I'm in Roseville, right at the edge of Granite Bay and Orangevale. My entire yard is clay - plus it is uber-compressed because the previous owner parked lots of construction equipment on it. We bought our house last year, and I was so excited to get my 'farm' going. Realized really...
I was wondering, has anyone else fed their chickens tuna? I had a bit left over in a can, and I put a pinch in to the babies bowl. One gal pecked at a piece, and ran around the box screaming with glee, while the other two chased her around in circles, completely not noticing the tuna still...
I've been using it since they were a week old. I take a pinch of it and rub it into their feathers once in a while, to protect against mites (the chicks squawk loudly in irritation as I do this... they are not yet used to being manhandled by momma!) I sprinkle a wee bit into their food dish...
I have one SLW who is 4 weeks old. I have no other SLW to compare her to. However, I noticed her comb is getting quite pink and I started to worry she might be a roo. I posted a similar question a few days ago, and I'm hearing about 50/50 that she's a hen/roo. But from what I've read all...
Ok here's a few more pics. I tried to get some good shots of the feathers on her back - they look "Rounded" to me, if that is what it means when the end of the feathers is squared off instead of pointy.

Thank you! I'm just hoping she a tom-boy. LOL. Yesterday we had the babies out in a 'playpen'... and the SLW was the one who wanted to sit on my shoulder and peck at my eyelashes. The other two just wanted to cuddle. Eeep.

Hmmm interesting. Even without having a male comparison, I'm going to go home and examine her more closely, maybe post some more pictures. She seems like she's feathering out really nicely, in line with the other two. Guess we shall see.

You're positive she's a girl as in she's a laying hen? Gosh I sure hope so.
Katy - Thank you. Is it at all possible for gals to have a red comb at that age? Featherz says her female was red in a week?
I've never had a wyandotte who was that red that young that wasn't a roo......and...
