    My broiler started crowing???

So I have 15 Red Rangers, 9 of which are cockerels. They are at about 10 weeks of age and two days ago, I found out that one (possibly more) started crowing in the morning. And this concerns me. The hatchery (Murray McMurray) states that the Red Ranger takes about 12 weeks to mature, a time...

    Can anyone ID this chick??

yeah, they look like the brown broiler to me. They have been called different names: Rainbow Rangers, Red Rangers... but they are essentially the same breed. From the photo, I see some real Cornish Crosses, but it is funny how you ended up with some Red Rangers. Did they give them to you as a gift?

    CORNISH ROCK-Family pet?

I am not so certain about breeding the hybrid to other chickens. There has been a lot of discussion on this topic and this thread should help you get some insight: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/184354/breeding-cornish-x-rocks. I mean you could try to keep his alive as long as possible, but...

    baby chicks

They will need to stay under the heat lamp until they have grown feathers to keep themselves warm. It really depends on the breeds for the time of fully feathering. But I would say generally it takes them 3-4 weeks ti feather out. As to getting them outside, you could bring them out on a warm...

    Chicks & pecking order...

Well, as the chicks are growing up, they will have to "decide" their pecking order by pecking at each other a little or comparing who is taller... But once they have the order established, the commotion should be reduced. But always remember: as long as you have two chickens together, one would...

    Please someone help ASAP!!

There has been a lot of speculation with pine shavings affecting the chicken's health, but in all honesty, I raised my chicks on them and they are fine. As to the eating shaving problem: when they are first introduced to the shavings, they would peck at it and check them out; it is their...

    Good breeds to raise??

Well, it really depends on if you want a laying breed or a dual purpose breed. If you want just eggs and lots of them, then I would advice raising Leghorns for white eggs or Red Stars/Red sex-linked for brown eggs. If you want a back yard flock that gives you eggs but also meat then I would...

Broiler Chick Leg Problem! Please help!!!

Here is how it stands. This is why I don't think it has a splayed leg because its legs are fairly pointing forward. But I could be wrong. But this is what concerns me the most: it can not stand up for more than a few seconds and it can't stand straight. I still don't know what the...

Broiler Chick Leg Problem! Please help!!!

So out of my 16 Cornish Cross, one of them have this condition where it can't stand up for more than 3 seconds. I am pretty sure it is not a splayed leg because both legs are pointed fairly forward. Its legs are spread wider apart than the other ones and I don't know if that causes it to not be...

    Medicated feed to vaccinated chicks?

I have ordered 30 chicks to be vaccinated against coccidiosis, not knowing that my feed store does not provide non medicated feed. So I brought 2 fifty lb bag of medicated starter and have been feeding it to my chicks for three days. They seem fine, but I know I am not suppose to do that...

    An Outdoor Brooder?

I am having my broilers chicks arrived at late-February and I am thinking to brood them on the school farm. However, the chicken pen is outdoor, with 4-ft tall panels all around and the chicken wires to enclose the rest. I know a brooder must be warm and I will have heat lamps. But I will...
