    Sexing chicks

My mix of straight run chicks (speckled sussex, jersey giant, RIR, and 2 mystery) are 4 weeks old today. Is there a way to tell the sex of the chicks yet? I assume there is since you can order day old hens or roos but I'm not exactly sure how to do it. Any and all help is appreciated.

RP Order Placed! (sexing question & sponsor plug)

So I called the number on my invoice to confirm my order and I will know the end of next week when my shipment will be made since when I placed the order it only said shipment in May. I asked if they themselves were a hatchery and I was speaking with the "order office" and not directly to the...

    Field Mice In My Coop

For two years I battled the mice and rats on and off. I had the traps, bait boxes, and pellet gun and would exterminate till they were all gone. Couple weeks to a month later they would be back and the cycle would start over. Last fall a neighbor adopted a barn cat and that cat adopted our...

RP Order Placed! (sexing question & sponsor plug)

If it is true what you are saying, the place I may be getting these from may be sending me poults that are not actually day olds? That does worry me if the four I ordered need to ship to this particular hatchery and then be repackaged with my chicks and then sent to me. I can understand how...

    darn fox!!

An update to my previous post puts us at two additional mornings without even the barn cat in the trap. I am using cracked raw eggs as bait. Is this bait alluring enough for a fox? Does anyone think the two mornings that the cat was in the trap has clued the fox in to the ambush if it was...

    Healthy chickens Suddenly found dead

I had a similar problem. I believe my killer to be rat poison. Before the barn cat decided to adopt our property I had a minor rat problem. I set snap traps and had a bait box as well. I had some luck but also had some traps that were picked clean but not tripped. The only time I had...

    Rattlesnake in nesting box

Relative to Phil E and 7L's solution, I heard on Howard Stern this morning that Richard's father puts golf balls in the nesting boxes so the snakes eat the balls and die. Rather simple trick.

    darn fox!!

I was going to start a fox thread and saw this one. Sorry for your lose as I feel your pain and anger. Sunday morning about 5 am we awoke to the rooster going mad for a few seconds then went silent. It was too dark to see anything and later in the moring when I went out the rooster didn't...

RP Order Placed! (sexing question & sponsor plug)

Even though I only ordered 4 poults I also ordered 25 chicks. They will all ship together. Will that help ease the stress for the poults as you have mentioned? Also I plan on brooding the poults seperate from the chicks. Will this help or should they be together?

RP Order Placed! (sexing question & sponsor plug)

So I had an ordeal where my incubator didn't hold the right temperature a few weeks ago and I lost 9 Royal Palm Eggs. To skip the incubation drama and waiting torture I ordered 4 RP poults from the BYC sponsor chickensforbackyards.com. They won't ship till May but at least this time at the end...

WANTED: Royal Palm Hatching Eggs or Poults (Sussex, NJ)

I recently purchased hatching eggs from ebay and lost all of the eggs due to my own temperature miscalculations. Anyway, I am looking for the next batch or even a few poults if they are within decent driving distance from Sussex County NJ and would rather support my new friends at BYC than do...

Locked down my first ever Turkeys

Good luck to you! I currently lost all of my 9 RP eggs due to low incubator temps. So disappointed but excited for you! Post pics when they hatch!

Not to hijack crunchy's thread but ranch you mentioned "sniffing as you go". Being as green as I am with incubating eggs, can you actual smell a bad egg or were you making a funny?

    rookie mistakes?

Thank you for the seasoned insight. I'll remove the eggs you mentioned and leave in the other few till the weekend and recandle but I agree that they may be lossed as well. The loss of both time and money hurts but the loss of time hurts the most. I suppose I'll shuffle on down to the "for...

    rookie mistakes?

Ok here is my report and I don't believe it is a good one. I candled all of the eggs again. Keep in mind thta today is day 24. The two chicken eggs had only a small mass. I eggtopsied them and found only a very early stage embryo in each. I then candled the turkey eggs. I found three clear...
