problem Yawning (choking?) in 4 week old chick

I hatched 7 chicks and 2 have died in the last 2 weeks. I am not entirely sure why. I have noticed a few of them look like they are choking. Now we have one doing it and I don't want it to die too. I have read Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens and searched this forum but can't quite tell...

5 hatched and at least 4 more on the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW! They didn't start until last night (the end of day 23) and today is day 24. I am pretty darn sure now that my thermometer is out of wack, hence the slow hatch. This is soooo exciting! For all of you on your first hatch wondering...

Now have 4 pips! The first one has been pipped for 17 hours now, without much change for the last 8. The hole is mostly covered with white membrane that seems dry, and the veins look like they are drying up. It's still bumping around and peeping but can't seem to break the white membrane. I...

Quote: Yes---I have a plastic syringe with a long very skinny tube on it for adding water to a barometer that I have been using to add water through the vent holes in the incubator. The troughs seem pretty full on the bottom of the incubator, should I just keep adding? I do see a red vein...

Quote: Did they take longer than 12 hours to hatch after pipping? I am on hour 12 with the first pip, and the membrane is still covering the hole. I don't think I should do anything, but don't know either. I am on day 23 right now. Sounds like yours took 24 hrs from pipping to hatching...

Yes I agree. I won't do this again without proper equipment (moisture reading.) In this instance a lady gave me 2 dozen fertile eggs and I live on a very rural remote island, so had no choice but to try. I knew moisture was important, but until reading this forum didn't realize HOW important...

Sorry, got my wording wrong, I meant a pip (broke through the shell) but has done nothing more in 9 hours, and the rest aren't doing anything either, so I don't know. My daughter heard chirping, so it's still alive. Still keeping our fingers crossed!

No---really nothing:( It seems like the humidity should be high enough, maybe too high? I know I won't do this again until I have a way of checking. I am still a small bit hopefull----tic toc tic toc:rolleyes:

Oh thank you! For some reason couldn't find whether to count first day as day 1. That means they aren't really that late!

I don't know what the exact humidity is. I only have a thermometer, not the other thing that tests water. I will be getting one for the next hatch for sure! I have all of the troughs filled and the little windows have steam on them, so I am hoping that is enough humidity. The temperature has...

No chirping yet on day 21/22

Thank you for pointing me to the hopeful post. We STILL don't even hear chirping yet, and this is day 22/23 (I am not exactly sure how to count, but they were set on the afternoon of Feb 16th) I just wish we knew if anything MIGHT happen, because none of us can do anything but check every five...

OK, my daughter is now singing to them and she is SURE it makes them wiggle more! They still aren't chirping, and I would have expected them to do at least that by now. Thanks for the encouragment! I love this forum! I will be patient....I will be patient...I will be patient...

We would be happy if even ONE hatched! My girls have spent hours just staring through the clear window in the incubator. This is so Sloooooow. I would just like to know if there is hope, but for now we are hope-ful! Good luck with the rest of your hatch! This is so exciting!

This is my first time incubating chicken eggs (or any sort for that matter.) I have 2 girls and we are SO anxiously awaiting our hatch. I set the eggs on the afternoon of February 16th, but am not sure if today or yesterday counts as day 21. There are a few (out of 22) eggs wriggling, but so...

    First hatch!: wiggling and scratching!!

Just looked at the video on your blog and it is sooo exciting! My girls and I have 2 dozen chicks "supposed" to be hatching yesterday/today so very exciting to watch yours! Thanks.

First Hatch!!! Eggs started chirping last night!!! Still no Chicks!!

I set eggs in my incubator on February 16th and don't hear chirping. Should you be able to hear it through a styrofoam incubator? A couple of the eggs look like they are moving though. Help! This is painful!
