I'm finally getting back into chicks after nearly 2 years without any. I know this is going to sound really silly, but I like my flocks to "color coordinate." For instance, if I go with Black Australorps I'd like to have something that is white with black markings, or just white, etc. I like...
I have a buff silkie, appx 4 months old, who has been acting SUPER strange the last couple of days. She has her head all the way back, touching her back, staring up into space and sort of waving her head around. (I've been calling her Stevie Wonder because it is the movement he has always made...
This morning, in just under 3 hours, we butchered, skinned, rinsed and cut up 21 meat birds. We did the rangers and the cornish. I have to say, for the time invested, I am much more pleased with the cornish overall. The rangers were several weeks older and still nowhere near the size of the...
My hubby is about to break ground on my new barn. It's not huge, but will have a milk room (goat) and 2 stalls (goat) on one side, and a tack room or brooding room on the other side plus a large chicken coop (chickens free-range during the day). My bunny cages will be either mounted under the...
I need to see what an appx 6 week old BA chick looks like (maybe 7). I do NOT recall my ba's looking like this last year. These are feathered pretty good and there is no greenish tint to the feathers and they are a more dull black. They still have white on their faces and a white tip under some...
what do you feed?
My layers free-range from dawn til dusk When they go in, they have scratch grains and oyster shell (and, of course, fresh water in and out the coop). Other than that I don't feed them anything. They get scraps when we have them, and they do pick at the younger birds' starter...
We are about to break ground on our new barn. I just want to know how many hens an 8x16 coop is suitable for if they are only in at night. Hubby is going to make a separate brooding room that is completely insulated for when I raise babies, and I'll have to have something for the in-betweens...
Here are a few updated pics I took today. The weather was (and is) just stunningly gorgeous today. My birds were all enjoying it. I posted some pics of my meat guys under meat birds if anyone is interested in checking them out.
Here is a pic of some of my mixed pullets. There are Delawares...
Here are a few pics of my barred silver meat birds (about 5 weeks now), and my cornish x (about 3-3.5 weeks now).
Here are some lazy silvers taking a rest from running the pasture.
Here is a close-up of one of the barred silvers.
Now here are some of my cornish x out in their pen...
My cornish cross chicks are only a couple weeks old, and they really stay away from the heat more than my other chicks the same age (probably because they're so heavy!!)
Do meat birds not need as much heat for as long as the smaller laying breeds?
My barred silvers are running in the barn now (not quite ready to give them full access to the pasture because they are still a little small). The hens sleep in there at night so their feeder stays in there. The meat birds love to get over there and sneak the hens' feed when I let them out to...
Or something other than starter, but NOT laying pellets. I don't do laying pellets even for my layers. I just want to start my teens on something besides starter. They are probably at least 8 weeks (not sure quite how old they were when I bought them from the feed store).
I'm just wondering what some reasons for doing both would be. I've been reading some positives about the rabbits and considering doing both (though I'm not sure I can actually do it).
Anyway, if you do raise both, can you tell me why?
I am raising some barred silvers that are a meat bird I bought from PA. They are bred to do more like the Rangers, and I wanted that.
However, I was at TSC and saw the Cornish and just thought it'd be nice to do a side-by-side comparison. So I picked up half a dozen.
I have to say that I...
I brought home another 13 chicks this evening. RIRs, Leghorns and some Cornish X. I'm actually raising Leghorns for someone else, but the rest are for me (as if they 50ish that I had already weren't enough!!)
Someone help me. I definitely have a problem.
Here are some pics of my barred silver meat chicks. They got to get out in the grass today. They are right at 3 weeks, but I'm not counting the first week since they spent several days with the USPO traveling here...
