    Ages & tendering time...

We just butchered some ducks and chickens and did not let them age as recommended (we didn't know). Is it too late to let them age after they are thawed out? Will they taste bad now?

Everyone, post your best homemade chicken feed recipes!

I thought I would update. We now buy wheat and barley by the ton as this is the best for ducks and also for turkeys and chickens as well. The grain can store airtight for up to 8 years if you do not grind it. Once you grind it, you need to use it within a month. We provide the wheat and...

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

I just wanted to share my own story briefly... We initially raised our turkeys outside and let them roost on home-made roosting bars out in the field. But we became concerned when owls started taking our ducks and moved the turkeys into the same barn bay that the chickens are in. Within a...

    Lavender Orpington project ....

I am thinning out my lavender orpington flock to just three adults for now (have chicks in the brooder box and waiting to see feathering and shaping out on those). I have three with the feathering where it almost looks like someone teased it or they've been in a bad booty tail fight. lol...

Everyone, post your best homemade chicken feed recipes!

What about wheat bran? I've been using this and so far really like it. The bag says 13% complete protein. Anything else beneficial about it? Also, does everyone find that their chickens/birds eat less with this kind of diet as opposed to the corn-based diet? I've been noticing that myself...

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

pips&peeps : A small dot occurs occassionally, but stripes are not good. As bummed as I am, I am really glad that we can tell right away when they are chicks and that 'easter eggers' are... well, branded. If that makes sense. Some breeds, we don't know until they are older sometimes.

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Does the dot or ! mean that there are non-ameraucana genes in them? Or that different ameraucana colors were mixed? Or is it something that is will happen always in "purebred" lines from time to time? I've never had this happen with our rooster and hen we have and just assumed it never...

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

pips&peeps : Looks like you got some easter eggers. I too got some eggs from someone this year and the chicks hatched out with stripes. Needless to say they all featered in like ee's and were cockerels. I have already culled them all and moved on. "Genetic Diversity" is not such a great...

Question about the wheaten ameraucana chicks: I hatched a bunch of eggs from another farm and some hatched out the typical white/yellow color with the slight black wing tips. But some hatched out with other markings such as a single strip on head or back and one even hatched out all black...

Corn and wheat flour for chickens and ducks?

My husband found a good deal on corn and wheat flour and wants to feed it to our birds. Primarily our non-laying ducks. He bought a small sample bag to try and they seem to like the cornmeal although at first they were confused by it. We haven't tried the wheat flour yet. Our birds...

    Saxony Duck Thread

I am not sure if there is already a Saxony Duck thread and if there is, link me to it. If not, I am hoping other Saxony raisers will flock here. Hee hee. We currently have almost 50 saxony ducklings and they are between 3-4 weeks old. We are waiting for them to feather out so that we can...

Thank you everyone that responded to my question about crossing my wheaten roo with our barnyard flock. I gave hubby the go ahead to try it. My favorite all-time easter egger cross that I ever had was a leg-horn and white ameraucana cross. Beautiful white easter egger that laid huge light...

    Mealworm farming

Great posts and great pictures! Just a few questions, I can order mealworms from Uncle Jim's Worm Farm, right? (http://www.unclejimswormfarm.com). He sends the actual meal worms and not the beetles. What do I do with them when they arrive (food, water, etc). I am going to do the three-drawer...

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

This isn't really about purebred ameraucanas but I know someone will have an answer. I have two purebred ameraucanas plus random easter eggers as well as a buff orpington, cuckoo maran, and sussex. The wheaten ameraucana rooster mates with all of them. My husband wants to hatch eggs from all...

Quote: 3 to 4 weeks. All wheaten chick feathers will have a random partridge pattern that doesn't represent gender at all. You might not be able to see it if they are splash wheaten. Wait til they get older and the big feathers start coming in on thier backs. Big blue or black splotches, not...
