    Harmful things in coop

Hey guys I dont know if this is the right place to post but here goes. My mom was told by a co worker that a dog cannot stay, or be housed in an old chicken coop or it will kill the dog. I could see this happening from ammonia build up, but a coop that is vacant for a while shouldnt have any...

    Moving to the coop?

I was thinking of moving my chicks to the coop this weekend to give them some room. They are about 3-4 weeks old. My coop is fully enclosed and insulated and I would put the heat lamp in w/them. I live in Missouri and it should be warm from here on out. Would there be any problems w/this...

    Wood chips for coop?

I was curious about wood chips for the coop. I have access to a lot free wood chips from a tree service that I work with. Would this be acceptable material or does it need to be just pine shavings? Is there a type or types of wood that would cause a problem for the chickens? Thanks

    Outside run corn crib

Hi guys I am in the process of working on my coop and run. I have an old corn crib that was used by the previous owner as an animal cage. It is made of about 1/4 inch welded steel and bolted down to concrete footings. The gaps between the steel are probably about 2.5 inches apart. I would...

I wouldnt think of it as super air tight. The coop area is fully enclosed besides the one exterior window and a small door for them to go in and out of. The room was actually used to for an indoor space for monkies prior to my ownership. It is in a corner of the barn and shares a wall with a...

I guess that is part of my question, would they benefit more from windows, even if they are for the interior of the barn, or from an opened up ceiling? Part of me thought that if the ceiling remained it might be better for winter.

Thanks for the advice, also I wasnt aware that standard chicken wire is that week! I know there is more to the ventilation thing than just ammonia but should I be removing the ceiling or should I leave it be? I just figured they needed more than one window in the coop area, but then again I am...

    Ventilation verification

Hi all I am new to the site. I have been using this forum to answer questions as I am preparing my coop and run areas. I would like to verify my thoughts on ventilation. In my barn I am converting a 12x11 room into a coop for probably 4 chickens. Right now it has one south facing window that...
