Need a crash course...four wild, orphaned ducklings..

None of them made it through the night. I feel terrible. We brought them in about 7 last night, and they were in an addition on our house that is like a sunroom. It was never below 85 in there last night. I am really worrying now that I have brought some disease home. I have three chickens...

Need a crash course...four wild, orphaned ducklings..

Oh, and it's hot as blue blazes outside here, so I wouldn't think they'll need any heat during the day at least. It's 90, at least.

Need a crash course...four wild, orphaned ducklings..

Thanks. The smallest one has already died. I guess the trip over was too much. There are two that look good, and another one that looks pretty bad. Of course, we don't know what happened to the momma duck. I hope I haven't imported any illness. We have chickens, as well as two wild...

Need a crash course...four wild, orphaned ducklings..

They wandered up to a friend's house on Friday, with no momma duck. She's kept them alive all weekend, but she works really long hours, so I'm going to give it a shot. Pointers?

    Weirdest egg yet...

My three hens each lay most every day. Normally, we have typical brown eggs. Today, we got this:

Added new hen, now the others aren't laying

Thanks! I sure hope that is it. I miss my eggs every day.

Added new hen, now the others aren't laying

My two hens, who will be a year old next month, have been laying most every day all winter. We added a third hen about a week ago, and since the day after adding her, nobody has laid an egg. Is it an adjustment to the new hen, or did the (evil) new hen teach them to lay outside the coop?

8 mo old EE still not laying

Our EE took forever to start laying, but since she started, she has laid huge eggs almost every day. I think she was eight months when she started.

Barred Rock and EE Laying Ages???

My EE didn't lay until 28-29 weeks. I thought she was defective! Our others were all laying at about for six weeks at that point. Mine aren't noisy really, but I'd worry more about smell bothering people. You'll have to really work at keeping it cleaned up, if you are on small lots. I have...

    Her eggs are brown?

Quote: Her legs are a grayish green. Co-op said she was an Ameraucana, but obviously that wasn't quite right. It's okay, of course. She's a good chicken either way. I was just hoping for something different than what the other two lay. Thanks for the compliments on my dogs. They have...

    Her eggs are brown?

Quote: Sorry about your egg color. I would feel the same way, as I got 3 EE's specifically for the blue/green egg. On a brighter note...are those Aussie's in the background? The blue merle is Sidda, my nine-year-old aussie. The black tri is a shelter dog, and we think English Shepherd, but...

    Her eggs are brown?

Well, the Co-op said she was an Ameraucana, but everyone here said EE. She is a nice hen - funny and friendly, and I am glad she is FINALLY laying. I was just hoping for color. Wah.

    Her eggs are brown?

So, Oscar is 7 months old, and she must finally be laying. Yesterday, we had three eggs, and we only have two other chickens. Today, she was in the nesting box, and just a little later, there was another light brown egg. What is up with this? I was so excited about a blue or green egg. : (

    Lost one during the day.

Have you gone looking for her? She may have just gotten out and wandered off. I've found mine some funny places.

Changing their set-up while we're out of town?

Well, I hadn't thought of that, but it might fit. That would at least allow them to keep laying in the same spot. I think they'd still go in there to sleep, but really - who knows? I don't worry much about predators as long as my dogs are out, which they will be, since I won't be here to...

Changing their set-up while we're out of town?

I let my chickens out to free range about 7 a.m. - then put them up in their "tractor" at dark. This works out great, but I'm going to be gone for 4-5 days next week, and my mom will be coming to feed animals. I was thinking about putting them in my unused 10x10 chainlink, covered dog pen for...
