    Adding to my flock

I just recently lost my best layer to my friend's dog. My little bitty flock is down to 2. I am worried about how cold they will be with out their "big mama". I was considering buying a few 10 month old hens since I don't want to have pullets in the house this late in the year. Here are my...

    Weird egg...

looks normal on the inside. I'm thinking either a deficency or problems with the plumbing. She's my odd one out. This was her first weirdy so we will see if it happens again. You've seen that little umbilical cord thing on yolks of commercial eggs? That's what I was thinking this was, only...

Winter coop lighting, what do you use?

The blue light (street lights, not enough spectrum light in offices) has been known to throw off human cicadian (sp?) rhythms. So why not birds? We are used to a broad spectrum with red and yellows, blue is a night hue.

    Weird egg...

Ok, here goes... Ideas why she laid a "candle" egg? I'm sure the hen that laid this is my black aust. and I would guess she is stressed. She is low on the pecking order, the lowest.

    Weird egg...

One of my hens laid an egg that has an "almost" opening coming out of the top with the "umbilical cord" coming out. I am unsure of how to post an image. Any ideas why? Could it be calcium, they are on a layer feed.

Chain Link for surrounding the run?

I'm going to pick up a dog kennel/run tomorrow and was wondering if 3 ft up the side for hardware cloth is enough to keep the rats out. Was planning on leaving their food out at night, not worried about critters getting into coop. I will be putting chicken wire over the top but wasn't sure...

    Brooder in bedroom ok?

Ok, in my case it was the chickens that came before the coop and that was my delema. Now it's weather proofing the coop so it will last and have to *gasp* get it OVER the fence! Oye... so the chickens are still in me bathroom! LOL

    Brooder in bedroom ok?

Mine are in the Master Bathroom and I wonder after your post, Kemclaughlin, if it's Springtime or Chicktime that's causing my sinus issues!

*~ My Brooder - Auto Waterer - Auto Feeder - Easy - PICTURE HEAVY ~*

May I ask where you found the watering nipples. Did you have to order them? I am looking to do this for my girls when I build their run.

How many parrots do you have?

I am paired with a 27 year old blue front amazon. "She" has never been sexed, came to me when she was 13 with the name Lady so we kept it. (She's also never laid an egg, though she does nest). She HATES men, long story for my theory there since my husband could hold her before we brought her...

Quote: Do ya think it to be Bantam? She's only about 2 lbs if that. That's what I was going to say. She looks like the pic of what my Sicilian Buttercup is supposed to look like and shes about 4-5 weeks (so aptly named Spot) I will see about posting pics soon... Beauties they are. I don't...

Treats - Who can tell LOL

I was wondering about dandilion greens but can you give them the flowers too? My ladies are about 4 weeks old and I was wondering if I could get them started on greens, weeds and other things I'd like to "recycle" Thanks for the great thread for a newbie like me...

    New to chickens

Hi there, We just started our flock today. Found this site via cute bumper sticker! We have 3 chicks: 1 Rhode Island Red, one Sicilian Buttercup and one Australorp. I am amazed at how quickly they are used to us petting and socializing with them. I shouldn't be considering they are 3 weeks...
