    scaly leg mites

... why would anybody use gasoline? Hell, I'd be really weary of letting it touch my skin, why would it be safe for any animal?

    scaly leg mites

I used just regular vaseline in a rooster we got some years ago. i applied it twice a day, morning and evening, not too much that the bird could eat it or that it'd get his belly feathers greasy, but enough to get under the scales. It took maybe a week for the mite debris to start falling off.

    Dog attack - please help

I'd keep her in a separate run so the hens can see each other but not get to each other until her skin is more healed. You don't want the other birds to peck her just in case.

Elderly hen with prolapsed vent, need some help

So Mega has gone broody which is good because no more egg laying and few poops a day. I put her in her covered crate about 4 hours ago and pushed her prolapse in, went to check on her a few minutes ago and it was still inside, yay progress!!!

Need Assistance Draining my hen- Los Angeles Area

LA farmer, I don't know where in LA you live, but I took my rooster to this clinic in Rosemead 3 weeks ago and the avian vet, Dr Pavlik, treated him. I didn't even know there was a quarantine (my chickens are just pets and I haven't got any new birds in years)...

Elderly hen with prolapsed vent, need some help

did it like an hour ago, but took it off because it popped out again. It's been easier to pop it back in lately, but I'm just so worried it's been a week of dealing with this and it doesn't seem to improve much :(

    Dog attack - please help

don't use peroxide. Use a saline solution, then smear it with neosporin. Keep the hen in a covered crate so she can calm down. The puncture wound worries me a bit because she could have internal damage, but for now keep her in a quiet place.

Elderly hen with prolapsed vent, need some help

Here are pictures of how her prolapse looks when it pops out. She had some poop stuck but I soaked her butt and gently worked as much as it off. Then that's the bandage thing i made using the pictures from that thread as guide. since yesterday it's been easier to push the tissue back inside, but...

Elderly hen with prolapsed vent, need some help

So my 8-year-old hen, Megatron, has had a prolapsed vent for a week now. I've followed all the advice I've found online - clean the vent carefully, use prep H, push the tissue back in gently, and spray vetericyn 2-3 times a day and keeping her in a dark place for most of the day. It keeps...

Hens have been fighting for almost two months

I have a small flock and pretty much all of my birds are over 6 years old. Two of them, Mega and Rusty, have been fighting non-stop for weeks now. Rusty tends to go broody a lot, and when they began to fight I believe it was because Mega wanted to use the nest Rusty was in. They fought pretty...

Hen has been drinking a lot of water, crop is full of liquid in the mornings, should I worry?

Thank you for the reply :D. I leave for work really early so I'll ask my brother-in-law to let her out to drink water at around 8 or 9am, but not let her eat anything until I get home at 2pm. right now i have her in the crate because she was trashing around due to the crop "bra" I put on her...

Hen has been drinking a lot of water, crop is full of liquid in the mornings, should I worry?

I made a makeshift support to press on her crop a bit and I'm keeping her in a cage for 24 hours with no food or water (I'll let her drink some water in the afternoon) to see how much it will empty. the "bra" kinda broke her brain right now xD. I just got a new job and it sucks that I have to...

Hen has been drinking a lot of water, crop is full of liquid in the mornings, should I worry?

I use pine shavings for nesting. I'll keep her isolated tomorrow with only water and see if that helps deflate her crop. It feels kinda mushy (weird word to describe it) and I massaged it about 2 times today. if it's still big tomorrow morning I'll make her a bra. Can the crop heal and regain...

Hen has been drinking a lot of water, crop is full of liquid in the mornings, should I worry?

This EE hen is about 6 years old. She's always had rather runny poop since she was a chick, and lately I've noticed she's been drinking a lot, and I mean a lot, of water when I let them out early in the morning. This morning when I opened the coop I noticed her crop was really full of water...

Comment by 'Chido' in article 'Resin Chicken Coop'

really late reply and you've most likely got yours by now. I live in CA so it gets pretty hot here, so I leave one of the main doors open during the day for extra ventilation, but the coop is placed under an orange tree so the heat isn't that big of a problem until mid afternoon when the sun...

    Hen sudden death

I wish I could do the necropsy, but I'm at work and I think my BIL has already disposed of the body. We have taken our dead birds to get necropsies before at this place in san bernardino (forgot the name) but I don't think he'll do it this time. I"ll find out when I get home, sigh :( I was...

    Hen sudden death

she was lying on her stomach, wings slightly spread open, but neck bent in a U shape to the side. She was still shaking a bit when I went to see her, but she was dead. she was fine 5 minutes before and my BIL saw the head hen attack her right before she died.

    Hen sudden death

This morning I heard a bit of commotion outside my window as I was getting ready to work, and I heard my brother-in-law go out to deal with the hens. He called me because something was wrong with on hen. She was fine a few minutes ago, and she ran away with the flock a few minutes prior because...

Comment by 'Chido' in article 'Coop de la Garza (re-purposed from an ugly shed)'

Beautiful! I'm a bit concerned about the chicken wire you are using, though. It is called that because it's meant to keep chickens out of any area you don't want them to go, but it's too weak and easily ripped by a raccoon or opossum. If you can, try attaching a couple feet of 1/2" welded wire...

    Tell Me Your Story

This might be a bit long, I hope you guys don't mind XD. I never thought about keeping chickens before until we got our first three chicks. We didn't even plan on getting chicks but alas, sometimes fate has different plans for you. I've been living with my sister and her family for about 8...
