Our Ancona...Miss Diva is Queen Bee in our hen house. We have roosters, but she is in charge! She protects the flock and tells them when to come home to roost. She is also the smallest of the chicken's we have (they are all large breeds).
Well, the first time we let the girls and roos out, it was right before dark and we had our flashlights just in case. The stayed pretty close to the coop and went back in when it got dark with no encouragement. We were very lucky. They have always been willing to go back with any problems.
