brooder to coop in NC - is it too soon?

A lot of School Nurses were moved. We work for Human Services and assigned us schools that were closer together to save on gas.
I hatched my first set of chicks on April 10th and my second batch just hatched last night and today. So we are both just starting off with chickens!

I have (10) 16 week olds and (5 ) 2 day olds. My 15 and 10 year old kids as well as my hubby love them. We sit out in the back yard and let them free range for about an hour before dark everyday. When it starts getting dark the start getting closer and closer to the coop and right before it gets totally dark in they go. We just close the door and lock the coop. It is very good for the soul!!!

FYI: Ms. Drapau the Pre K teacher hatched out eggs for her class last spring! I thought it was Super Cool!

They sound so well-behaved! I hope mine are, when they are "cut loose." How did you let them out the first time? All at once? We do have our back yard enclosed - about 1/2 an acre. It's really the dogs yard, but maybe it would be a safe place to try them loose.

Tracy - I'm the same way about information. I have to have as much information as I feel there possibly is before I decide to do something! I think it works to my advantage most of the time.... if only it would help me organize this house! I hope to have some fluffybutts at my house ASAP!

I LOVE your brooder! Great idea! I love listening to the peeping! So sweet! They all look like they're doing so well. The're so cute drinking out of the waterer too.

Well, the first time we let the girls and roos out, it was right before dark and we had our flashlights just in case. The stayed pretty close to the coop and went back in when it got dark with no encouragement. We were very lucky. They have always been willing to go back with any problems.
