Comment by '6chicksinatub' in article 'Chicken Treat Chart: The Best Treats for Backyard Chickens'

"I gave up on my birds knowing what was best for them when I caught them all eating a block of Styrofoam pellets." Our chickens eat the Styrofoam out of our jacuzzi cover every chance they get.

    Is this a Cooper's Hawk?

Quote: You mean the Red-tailed is actually devouring the Cooper's?! Q: What do Red-tailed hawks eat? A: Anything they want.

    Is this a Cooper's Hawk?

I'm in Tucson, AZ and we have a huge year-round Cooper's Hawk population. Is this an immature one? It's not the best picture, but is there enough detail to tell what kind of hawk this is?

11 week old Easter Egger-- guy or gal? [Updated w/ new photo]

I think SpeckledHen hit right on the money. I don't think he's a mix, I think he's a sub-par hatchery Cochin. I think I remember seeing a sign for Silver Laced Cochins over the brooder tank next to the 'Assorted Ameraucanas.' I bet he got put back in the wrong tank by a kid. Embarrassingly...

Too early to sex 4 week old Sebrights? w/pics [Update w/ new photo]

I think you're right about the age, the feed store said they ordered them mid July, we got them on on Aug. 13 and they were pretty feathered. My revised guess is they're 6 to 7 weeks old now. And, the Gold is 'crowing', even though it sounds more like a squeaky door. They look great but do not...

11 week old Easter Egger-- guy or gal? [Updated w/ new photo]

Here's a recent photo of "Sarah." We got rid of the pecker and his feathers are coming in. He's actually got a back! We're hoping for a tail soon. He's 18 weeks old and hasn't started to crow. Yet. And, I've been calling him Dyn-o-mite since he looks a lot like Jimmy Walker, from 'Good Times.'

Too early to sex 4 week old Sebrights? w/pics [Update w/ new photo]

We got these guys last week, the feed store said they were about 3 weeks old then. So I'm estimating 4, 4.5 weeks old. Is that too young? I've got more pictures if a different view would be helpful. The Sebrights: Silver: Golden: Thanks.

11 week old Easter Egger-- guy or gal? [Updated w/ new photo]

We've only had chickens since April, so what I know is basically nothing. Having you guys, and everyone at BYC, that really know what they're talking about-- being able to ask about my chicks is great. So, I looked at some of the pictures people have posted of their Silver Laced Cochins, and...

11 week old Easter Egger-- guy or gal? [Updated w/ new photo]

"Assorted Ameraucana Pullets" is what the sign said at the feed store. I figured "she" was really an EE after reading a few posts on one of the BYC Ameracauna threads. I also gathered that EEs were such a mixed bag that just about anything that laid or came out of green/blue eggs was an EE. We...

11 week old Easter Egger-- guy or gal? [Updated w/ new photo]

This is Sarah Connor. Please excuse her back end, she gets pecked at a lot by another chicken we've got. The pecker may be moving out soon if she doesn't clean up her act. I'm unsure of Sarah's gender. She's got single looking comb, which I've read is girly. But she's got the black and...

    The EE braggers thread!!!

I have a wonderful 10.5 week old EE that I'd like to share and brag about, but I can't post photos yet. Still unsure about her (hoping) gender. I'll put them up as soon as I can.

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

I'm sure the answer is here somewhere-- but, how many posts do I need to have to be allowed to post pictures of my 10.5 week old EE?

    Mixing standards and bantams

I'm posting a few years after this thread started, but it was really helpful to me. We have a flock of 6 10 week old birds-- 5 standard and 1 bantam. (2 Australorps, 2 California Whites, an EE, and the bantam Cochin.) I'm beginning to suspect the Cochin's a roo. We really like him a lot and...

    Feeling Nervous...Cochin Roos or Pullets?

@ kharmel: Wow! That is very red. We have a 7 wk old gold-laced bantam cochin whose got a large-ish comb w/ some wattle, but it's not red (more of a yellowish salmon.) I don't know what that means, if anything, I posted a question about that on this topic. I let you know what I hear. When...

    Straight-run Sex-links?

I've seen more than a few on-line chicken breeders/dealers selling sex-link chickens as straight-run. Okay, I'm very new to this but, isn't one of the bigger points of sex-link chickens that you can tell if they're a boy or girl pretty easily? Then, aren't straight-run chicks a 50/50 shot at...

    Arizona Chickens

More Old Pueblo chickens! We're at Columbus just North of 22nd. We finally did it and bought 6 chicks about 7 weeks ago-- the day before Easter actually. We got: 2 Australorps, 2 California Whites, 1 'Ameraucana' an Easter Egger really but, you know and 1 bantam Cochin. There's a suspect roo...

    Comb size or color?

I've seen lots of information about combs being an indicator of a chicks gender. I understand it's not a 100% sign, and the experienced BYC users say that over and over, and I really like that honesty about this forum. So, I have one (for now) question about it. Is the comb's size or it's...

Hi, new here from Tucson, AZ

Hi. My wife's been talking for a couple of years about getting some chicken. Our daughter is 7 now and she let us know that she thought chickens were a great idea. So we did it a few weeks ago. We've had them about 7 weeks now and love all of it! Even the not so great stuff like the...

What breed rooster on cover of hobby farms chickens mag summer 2011

Thanks for the coloring info, that's really impressive looking on any breed. I got the Dusty Boots info from the magazine, I didn't give them credit for the photo in my original post. That was the only info about the cover shot available.

What breed rooster on cover of hobby farms chickens mag summer 2011

Me too! On the Dusty Boots Photography website there's a few pictures of the same bird, or one very much like it, and it's labeled as 'Wild Rooster' or 'Free Range Rooster'. It's in the Poultry gallery. Here's the link...
