Our hen, just a few weeks shy of 2 years old, was suddenly sick and died before the day was out. She walked leaning right, as if drunk. Isolated and medicated her, but she seized after several hours and died. Necropsy diagnosed colibacillosis.
The hens have a good sized yard area to roam...
We similarly lost a chicken suddenly on Sunday, and the preliminary necropsy indicates a hepatic (liver) rupture. She was limping early in the day; we moved her in and she was calm and resting a few hours until suddenly she started flapping crazily. When my son picked her up, she looked up at...
Our buff orp hesitates before even flying down from the coop roost. She is a very calm hen, but does like to announce after laying. I've never known her to try to fly over the gate, like our wyandotte and ameraucana.
Hope she pulls through, it is so sad to lose our pets. Just in case she doesn't make it, UC Davis runs a free necropsy program. It gave me peace of mind for the rest of my flock when I lost one.

Gold lakenvelder hens have beautiful coloration, our month old chick was a whim purchase. They are prone to flightiness, but that can be tempered with wing clipping.
This three-week old chick was supposedly an australorp, but when the red coloring appeared on her face and then her feathers began growing in this week, we realized she is the third of nine chicks we purchased which were not what we asked for. We were able to quickly replace the speckled sussex...
I have a white ameraucana coming up on a year old, she has not started laying. She is the only ameraucana in my flock of seven, all others are laying. I have heard the ameraucanas to be late starters, but this seems extreme. Does this seem uncommonly late?
We have a mixed flock and I cannot help myself from adding during the coming spring hatch. Looking at an australorp, EE and maybe a polish. So many things to consider! Our ameraucana and silver-laced wyandotte are somewhat flighty ~ they fly over the gate into the main yard on a regular...
